Hostile and Benevolent Sexism: Relations with Self-Concept, Racism and Intercultural Sensitivity

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to explore the relations of hostile, benevolent, and ambivalent sexism with self-concept, racism and intercultural sensitivity. A correlational methodology was employed.
The Ambivalent Sexism Inventory (ASI), The Adjective Check-list to Assess Self-concept (LAEA), The Prejudice Scale (PS) and The Intercultural Sensitivity Scale (ISS) were administered. The sample comprised 802 participants from 18 to 65 years of age. The results confirmed that there was no relation between sexism and self-concept in the women; however, the men with high scores in benevolent and ambivalent sexism had high self-concept. There were positive correlations between sexism and racism, and negative correlations with intercultural sensitivity. A high level of subtle prejudice, being a male, and a high level of manifest prejudice were predictor variables of hostile sexism; and a high level of manifest prejudice, being a male, high self-concept, and a low educational level were predictors of benevolent sexism.

    ABSTRACT: This research project aims to identify differences in students' engagement in school life, in terms of both socio-personal characteristics (sex and educational stage) and type of school (state, private with some state funding and cooperative). Participants were 1229 students aged between 9 and 17 (598 from a worker cooperative and 631 from state and private stated-funded schools of the Basque Country and Catalonia). Three components were distinguished in engagement (emotional, behavioural and cognitive) as measured by a Spanish version of the Leadership, Organisational Learning and Student Outcomes (LOLSO) questionnaire by Mulford, Silins and Leithwood (2004). These data are related to the responses given to the Psychological Sense of School Membership (PSSM) questionnaire by Goodenow (1993), which examines factors affecting school engagement, with specific focus on students' sense of belonging. The results indicate that girls' engagement is higher than that of boys; that it decreases as students move up the school; and is higher in the worker cooperative than in the state or private stated-funded schools. Engagement was also found to be related to teachers' work and the relationship between teachers and students.

    ABSTRACT: This study analyzed the relationship between prosocial behavior and self-concept dimensions in a sample of 2022 Spanish students (51.1% males) of Compulsory Secondary Education. The prosocial behavior was measured with the Prosocial Behavior scale of the Teenage Inventory of Social Skills (TISS) and the self-concept was measured with the Self-Description Questionnaire-II (SDQ-II). Logistic regression analyses revealed that prosocial behavior is a positive and significant statistically predictor of high scores on the following self-concept dimensions: physical ability, parent relations, same-sex relations, opposite-sex relations, verbal, school, trustworthiness, and self-esteem. Those results were found in males, females and every Compulsory Secondary education year. However, prosocial behavior is not a significant statistically predictor of high scores on physical appearance, math, and emotional stability.

    ABSTRACT: This study analyzes the relationships between parenting styles and adolescent’s psychosocial adjustment (self-esteem) in the Portuguese culture. The sample was of 517 adolescents, 214 males (41.39%), and aged 11 to 18 years. The Parental Socialization Scale (ESPA29) was applied to measure parenting styles (authoritative, authoritarian, indulgent and neglectful), and the Multidimensional Self-Esteem Scale (AF5) to measure five dimensions of self-esteem: Academic, social, emotional, family and physics. Results from this study indicate that adolescents from indulgent families scored equal to or even better than those from authoritative families in some indicators of psychosocial adjustment. These results suggest that authoritative parenting is not associated with optimum self-esteem in Portugal. The study refers to the need for further research, taking account new contexts and cultures.
