Abstract

In this study, we focused on investigation of students’ knowledge and misconceptions about birds. The main goal was to find out elementary school pupils’ perceptions about birds. Pupils’ knowledge and misconceptions were evaulated by the self-constructed knowledge test. The test consisted of 30 questions, twelve of which were open-ended and rest of them were multiple choice questions. We prepared the questionnaires with respect to Slovakian elementary science schools’ curriculum concerning birds. The partipant students, 719 of them in total, vary seven Slovakian elementary schools. Their ages range from ten to sixteen. Statistical procedure was based on the comparison of results between boys and girls, between respondents from village and from town, between pet-owners and non-pet owners and among pupils of classes from 5 to 9 grades of Slovakian elementary schools. The overall view on results showed that Slovakian elementary school pupils had serious problems with birds. The wrong ideas are occurring in all dimensions and all age groups of pupils showed incorrect answers. Questions were distributed in five dimensions: 1. Identification of birds 2. Reproduction of birds 3. Food of birds 4. Birds senses 5. Bird migration. Girls achieved statistically significant higher score in comparison with boys. Pupils, who went through the curriculum about birds at elementary school was more successful in comparison with pupils, who did not yet. The effect of residence and pet was not significant on results.

... In a survey conducted with Bavarian adults, Enzensberger et al. [36] described lower bird identification scores among young participants. Additionally, this illiteracy is also reflected in several misconceptions regarding the anatomy of birds, their behavior (e.g., migration), and bird-human interactions [37][38][39]. ...

Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve holds a diversity of habitats and resources that are essential for migratory bird species’ conservation, and at the same time provides a rich milieu for the development of environmental education programs. This study evaluates the impact of a daylong and place-based environmental education program, performed at the Urdaibai Bird Center (UBC), on secondary education students’ environmental attitudes and knowledge. Students (n = 908) completed a written questionnaire where their perceptions on the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve and marshes, together with their interest in biodiversity, knowledge about bird migration and bird species identification skills, and attitudes towards conservation were assessed. Results show that students’ knowledge regarding Biosphere Reserves, marshes, and bird migration is limited, and that their bird identification skills are scarce. Although they scored high on environmental attitudes, a significant number of them feel that conservation efforts are excessive and hinder economic development. Students living within the Biosphere Reserve, as well as from rural milieus or who underwent primary education through a bird-centered curriculum hold a better knowledge of the local biodiversity. To adapt the environmental education program at the UBC, its integration in formal teaching/learning contexts via meaningful hands-on and/or project-based activities could be considered, together with the systematic evaluation of the outcomes.
... ird identification. With respect to gender differences, results are not conclusive. Research has revealed that boys had higher wildlife knowledge than girls (Huxham, Welsh, Berry, & Templeton, 2006), but there were no differences in knowledge about birds between males and females, as reported by Prokop, and Prokop, Kubiatko, and Fančovičová (2007). Kubiatko et al. (2011) found that Slovak girls were more knowledgeable about birds than boys. However, Randler (2008) reported a higher level of animal knowledge in girls, but the difference was minimal. ...

Birds are one of the most important species that can help protect biodiversity. Although birds are important beings for biodiversity and human existence, there is a relatively less quantity of research that has investigated the interest in and attitudes toward birds. This study aims to investigate the knowledge level of and attitudes toward birds among students in countries at different levels of economic development. To collect the data, a Bird Knowledge Questionnaire and a Bird Attitude Questionnaire were developed and used by the researchers in this study. These questionnaires were administered to a total of 852 students from different countries, including Colombia, Germany, Slovakia, and Turkey. The results obtained in this study showed that Colombian students had the highest interest in birds as compared to students in Slovakia, Turkey, and Germany. Girls had consistently higher interest in birds than boys in all countries, but there were no gender differences in the cognitive domain. Our research suggests that factual knowledge about birds is not a necessary prerequisite for interest in birds, but animal-related activities show strong associations with an interest in birds.

The present research explores benefits of using young students’ drawings in combination with written responses for gathering information about science concepts. Younger students are still very limited in their verbal expression and less biologically literate than older students. The aim was to determine primary school students’ conceptions about owls, experiences with owls and their sources of information, and to then determine how beneficial it is to combine information gathered from drawings and written responses in comparison to previous research done with lower secondary school students. Altogether, 280 students attending fourth and fifth grades from schools in Slovenia participated in the research. Students knew well the specific features of owls. Drawings provided more clear information about body parts and proportions, while owls’ specific habitats, behaviours and diet were more thoroughly described in their written responses. Students without experiences with living owls represented owls less thoroughly. Comparison of frequencies of responses in main categories of conceptions about owls showed that using drawings and written responses is equally beneficial for younger and older students. Gathering primary school students’ conceptions about science concepts with both drawings and written responses enables better assessment of a student’s knowledge than using just drawings or written responses.
