Abstract

Acute chest pain is one of the most common and potentially serious medical emergencies seen in hospital emergency departments. Because the elderly population is generally living to an older age, is more ambulatory, and is seeking more sophisticated dental care, an acute episode of chest pain in the dental office is a potential possibility. This paper will discuss a typical case report with emphasis not only on prevention, but on a step-by-step method for stabilizing any emergency situation that may occur in the dental environment.

Article
Medical emergencies can arise in the dental office. Preparedness for these emergencies is predicated on an ability to rapidly recognize a problem and to effectively institute prompt and proper management. In all emergency situations, management is based on implementation of basic life support, as needed. The author describes the appropriate management of two common emergency situations: allergy and chest pain.

Medical emergencies occurring in dental practice can be alarming. The keys to minimizing alarm are taking a thorough history so that possible emergencies can be, to some extent, anticipated, and having a good working knowledge of how to manage emergencies, should they arise.
