Developments in laparoscopic sterilization are described. Laparoscopic tubal cautery is associated with a failure rate ranging from 0.2 to 2.0 per 100 operations. The morbidity rate averages about 5% with an average of 1% requiring emergency surgery. Mortality ranges from 20 to 30 per 100,000 operations, compared with a non-laparoscopic sterilization rate of 25 per 100,000 operations.
