This special issue of Journal of Micromechanics and Microengineering is devoted to the 17th European Workshop on Micromechanics (MME 06), which took place at the University of Southampton, UK from the 3rd to the 5th of September 2006.
The MME workshop is now a well recognised annual European event, following on from the very first workshop which was held at Twente University, The Netherlands, in ... [Show full abstract] 1989. It brings together scientists and industrialists from all over Europe, presenting an opportunity to discuss a diverse range of topics in micromachining, microengineering and associated technologies.
The workshop is designed to be an informal occasion where students and young scientists are encouraged to present their latest research. There is a strong emphasis on discussions and the dissemination of ideas and know-how in a friendly atmosphere. The workshop provides a forum for young researchers to learn about new experimental methods and to enhance their knowledge of the field.
As ever, the two day workshop was attended by delegates from all over Europe. A total of 50 papers were accepted for presentation and there were a further six keynote presentations. As this special issue demonstrates, new trends are emerging in the field of microengineering, with many of the papers describing the fabrication or application of non-Si, polymer-based systems.
This special issue presents a selection of 19 of the best papers from the conference. Many of the presentations at the conference described early or immature work which will undoubtedly lead to complete papers in the fullness of time. The papers in this special issue highlight more mature and advanced research, and provide a snapshot of European-wide activities in this field.
All the papers went through the regular reviewing procedure of IOP Publishing, and I am eternally grateful to all the referees for their excellent work. I would also like to extend my thanks to Professor Robert Puers for advice on the final selection of papers and to Ian Forbes of IOP Publishing for managing the entire process. My thanks also go to the editorial staff of Journal of Micromechanics and Microengineering.
I trust that this special issue will provide a good overview of the topics presented at the workshop and I hope you enjoy reading it.
