... It has been documented that, for reasons which include financial and/or career stakes, exaggerated enthusiasm, influences from various sources and even ignorance, researchers haveintentionally or notdesigned and/or implemented research projects which neglect the lives, health, privacy and dignity of research participants [4][5][6]. This situation has been reported in both developed and developing countries [7][8][9][10][11]. ...

Background Training curricula in research ethics for potential and future researchers should be implemented and constantly updated. This requires data regarding training needs. Methods We conducted a cross-sectional survey on residents, fifth and sixth-year medical students registered in the 2006–2007 academic year at the Faculty of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences (FMBS) of the University of Yaounde 1, Cameroon. Results Two-fifths (40.4%) of respondents (response rate 70.9%) reported training in research ethics. Less than half were aware of specific regulatory texts relevant to research ethics. Among those who reported conducting a research project 66.7% declared having obtained informed consent from participants and 32.9% having submitted their protocol to an Ethics Review Committee. Participants identified training priorities in research ethics and responsibilities of key actors in the protection of research participants. Conclusion There is a need to improve the training and attitude of medical students and residents in order to prepare them to respect and protect research participants.

The term value system refers to the personal and societal qualities that individuals and communities consider worthy of holding within themselves and in contrast to the lesser worth of alternative qualities. For instance, those inspired by religious or spiritual values find them more worthy than secular or worldly values, and those who find religious teachings unconvincing or too doctrinaire may favor secular or pragmatic considerations to guide their behavior toward others. The term ethics is understood in several different ways, but in regard, for instance, to health, it is increasingly understood to be concerned with an analysis of the arguments and conclusions which find that a particular conduct affecting health is either right or wrong to undertake. Ethics concerned with human biology is often described as bioethics, which now transcends healthcare of individuals to encompass health interests of groups, societies, and national populations.

A 37-year-old chronic schizophrenic man underwent penile replantation after complete autoamputation using a kitchen knife. We report the first case of using medicinal leeches to salvage a penile replant after the development of postoperative venous congestion.

This case of malignant fibrous histiocytoma of the testis/spermatic cord was found in a Holocaust survivor who was injected with an unknown substance in the left testicle while in Auschwitz concentration camp in 1943. Because malignant fibrous histiocytoma is a neoplasm rarely found in this location, with only 26 previously reported cases, a review of this entity was performed. A review of Nazi medical practices in the literature and through the Holocaust Museum research department was undertaken in an attempt to ascertain identification of the unknown substance injected into this patient; however, exact identification of the Auschwitz experiment or experimenter could not be determined. A left radical orchiectomy was performed, and subsequent histolopathologic review revealed a well-encapsulated 27 x 22 x 17-cm malignant fibrous histiocytoma. The left testis was not clearly identified due to necrosis of the tumor. This is the largest malignant fibrous histiocytoma of the spermatic cord/testis recorded in the literature to date. Based on the unusual location and size, the intratesticular injection probably contributed to the tumor development and certainly caused the patient's delay in seeking medical treatment.
