The American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM) is the professional association of Certified Nurse-Midwives (CNMs). There are approximately 5,973 CNMs in the United States and its territories. The Division of Accreditation (DOA) of the ACNM establishes the Criteria for Pre-Accreditation and Accreditation of Education Programs in Nurse-Midwifery. These criteria are the basis for the accreditation process that is a joint activity involving both nurse-midwifery education programs and the DOA. The ACNM DOA is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as an accrediting agency for basic certification and basic graduate programs.
