Western natural science, arising from philosophical secularism, is a potent perpetuator of secularism. Greeks view of reality, was paradoxically strengthened by Christian denigration of nature and reason and by the later, successive European stances of anti-theologism, anti-metaphysicism and scientism. Islam, by seeing the unity of reason-intuition and nature- ghayb posits scientific and spiritual meaning in nature. Western secular science has produced spiritual and natural crises while the holistic, Islamic science resolves them. The desecularisation and Islamisation of society together with the resolution of science-generated crises demands a fundamental criticism of western science and the emergence of a healthier science.

[Show full abstract] attributes a relative religious significance to law and the secular government, namely questions concerning religion and morality - which should be within the Church's domain - have a greater influence and are on a higher level of spirituality and »sanctity«. According to the Orthodox teachings, both institutions (church and state) are of divine origin: the Church originates directly from God while the State does so indirectly and it is only through their mutual respect and cooperation that society can prosper. Protestant theologians (especailly Lutherans) rejected the need for an ecclesiastical organisation to act as an intermediary between the individual and God. Luther condemned the Christian Churches' attempts to gain influence within the secular government. In modern countries with a dominant Christian religious and cultural tradition, we can find several models of church and state relationships. The two most important models in countries with a mainly Catholic tradition are: »the strict separation of church and state«, which is characteristic of France, and the German concept of »cooperation between church and state«. In countries with an Orthodox tradition, the Greek model of »formal unity of church and state« is key and it was largely copied by other countries within this region. In Protestant countries, the most important models are »the strict separation model«, which is characteristic of the USA, and the »formal unity« model (i. e. in the UK and in Denmark). In countries with a Christian religious and cultural tradition we can observe the duality of spiritual and secular. The separation of church and state does not necessarily mean a separation of religion and politics in a society. The reader of this paper can easily learn, that theological and philosophical teachings about a position of Christian Church in a wordly life does not (perfectly) fit the actual (legal and factual) position of religious organisations in a modern countries with a Christian religious - cultural tradition.

Now, the search for a new paradigm that can ensure economic development without jeopardising environmental quality is being intensified. We need such a world view with a philosophical foundation where people think about nature before thinking about themselves, which can make us realise the deeper underlying reality of basic oneness. Heisenberg, about the relation between man and nature says that. “‘Natural Science’” does not simply describe and explain nature, it is part of the interplay between nature and ourselves. We can never speak about nature without, at the same time, speaking about ourselves”. This ecological harmony is possible when the entire universe is seen as a single largest family including all the living beings of the world. Vedic civilization realised this world view when they say, vasudhaiva kutumbakam. This world view further developed in the Upani·adic age with a firm philosophical foundation through its cosmological unity and sustainability. Such a holistic world view offers a new paradigm for development, a new socioeconomic system free from exploitation, defining in a novel way the relationship between man and nature thus realising the ecological balance we need today. An attempt has been made to explore the potentiality of Upani·adic world view as an alternative in resolving the sustainability crisis.

Varieties of Twentieth Century American Naturalism

Naturalism dominated twentieth century American philosophy.1 Naturalism is a philosophical worldview that relies upon experience, reason, and especially science for developing an understanding of reality. Naturalism demands that these three modes of understanding together shall control our notion of reality. Varieties of naturalism emerge because the many essential factors of experience, reason, ... [Show full abstract] and science can be coherently related in numerous ways. All naturalisms demand that experience, reason, and science be taken most seriously so that no fourth mode of understanding can be permitted to override them. This triadic unity moderates the excesses of phenomenalism and idealism, and filters out spiritualism and supernaturalism for their introduction of radical and mysterious discontinuities into knowledge and reality. Scientific method and knowledge play a crucial role in all naturalisms. Varieties of naturalism may be distinguished along three dimensions: the degree of ontological confidence given to science; the breadth of explanatory discretion given to science; and the number of scientific fields permitted to describe reality. From the logically possible combinations resulting from these dimensions, seven viable varieties of naturalism are distinguished and contrasted. Each of these varieties of naturalism has had champions in the course of twentieth century American philosophy, such as Dewey, Whitehead, Santayana, Quine, Sellars, Davidson, Churchland, Putnam, and Searle. The conclusion discusses the three major competitors during the twentieth century for the title of the “genuine” naturalism: Reductive Physicalism, Non-Reductive Physicalism, and Perspectival Pluralism. The struggles among these great naturalisms and the other viable varieties of naturalism have been bequeathed to the twenty-first century, and their outcomes may decide the ultimate fate of naturalism itself. Stage One: Science, Knowledge, and Reality. There are six primary options when considering whether science yields knowledge about reality: 1. Reality cannot be known at all—radical skepticism. 2. Reality only consists of what science cannot know about—only other non-sciences know reality. 3. Science rarely gives reliable knowledge about reality—other non-sciences know reality far better. 4. Science is able to give increasingly reliable knowledge about reality. 5. Science is the only source of knowledge about reality. 6. Reality only consists of what science knows about. Each of these six options present pathways to many different worldviews. Because naturalism at minimum presupposes that the knowledge about reality provided by science can seriously rival any other alleged source of knowledge, options 1, 2, and 3 are rejected by naturalists. Options 4, 5, and 6 can lead to varieties of naturalism. (4) Science is able to give increasingly reliable knowledge about reality. There may be other ways besides science for knowing reality, but those ways are not better than science. Science needs assistance from other ways of knowledge to fully understand reality. This option searches for a comprehensive worldview formed by blending together ways of knowledge. Two interesting varieties: (4)A. Ontological Dualism: there are two (or more) kinds of reality, knowable through two or more ways. For example, perhaps introspection is a non-scientific way of knowing reality because we are consciously aware of mental realities that science can never explain—leading to Mind-Body Dualism. (4)B. Synoptic Monism: there is only one kind of ultimate reality, but it is knowable through two or more ways. We consciously know of realities (perhaps mental in nature) that science cannot fully explain. Varieties include Dual Aspect Monism and also Panpsychism, which holds that the natural world explored by science is ultimately composed of entities that have a mental/spiritual aspect. Unlike option (4)A, synoptic monism can be used to develop kinds of naturalism. (5) Science is the only source of knowledge about reality. The only type of knowledge is scientific knowledge. However, some of reality consists of entities that cannot be known by science, simply because science is not designed to provide knowledge about these entities. Two interesting varieties: (5)A. Perspectival Realism: we are acquainted with the entities unknowable through science because we experience these entities in some other way. For example, much of experience that provides the data for science is not itself also known by science. But how are environmental issues included in such school subjects that especially discuss values and ethics? I conclude that there is confusion about what environmental education can be in societal school subjects. The environmental texts in textbooks do not always draw on the specific content of the societal subject in question but repeat content from the natural sciences. Therefore, I suggest contexts and perspectives for discussing environmental issues that would comport with these subjects and supplement existing environmental education at school.

[Show full abstract] our period of history, the sensate factors of materialism and secularism need to be dialectically counterbalanced by the reinforcement of memes that value the spiritual intimations of the realm beyond the senses. As we approach the twenty-first century, the memes that will undergird our spirituality will be those that resacralize nature and emphasize our unity as humans with all of universal reality, in an idea of common “beinghood.” Spiritual systems that accord with this trend in evolution will have to respect three conditions. They will (1) integrate the sensate and the ideational; (2) reflect the importance of the “flow” state of optimal experience, which matches ever-complexifying skills with comparable challenges; and (3) move the fulcrum of their worldview from the human being to the network of beings and its evolution.

How much have the Muslims progressed towards true integration of the Qur’anic Worldview in the curricula of the natural sciences in secondary Islamic education, whose students are at critical stages of their cognitive, affective, spiritual, social, and ethical developments? This article presents a qualitative report on findings from field research that analysed a few samples of integration models at a number of Islamic secondary schools in Malaysia and Indonesia, in relation to the ideal that integration constitutes a full merger or an organic fusion between knowledge that is revealed and that which is acquired through reason. In an effort to understand Western modern science, this article briefly assesses the worldviews that have brought about the natural sciences to its current stage. It proposes a model for Islamic secondary education where the natural sciences undergo a discreet but holistic reconstruction, reinterpretation, and redirection from the framework of, and organically infused with the Qur’anic Worldview, whilst enriching ‘Islamic studies’ with a good grounding in and appreciation of the natural sciences.

Freudian psychology, in particular, obstinately defi nes all psychic contents as refl ections and transformations of daytime reality, "day residues" in the Freudian vocabulary. Yet Western psychology's attempts to create a universal and secular language and structure for the nature of the unconscious have defi ned the very terms in which many people, particularly in Western culture, now approach the rather mysterious, and usually confusing, language of the night dream. Perhaps alone in Western psychological theory, the conceptual and applied work of Carl Jung, the famous Swiss psychoanalyst, off ers a bridge between these diff ering schematizations of the unconscious.

London: Hodder & Stoughton Ltd, 2012)) have highlighted several alarming aspects of modern science, which cause grave concern. Public confidence in the sciences based on naturalistic, empiricist or agnostic presuppositions to provide holistic and sustainable solutions to the global ecological, economic and human crises has been seriously eroded. The way forward for these concerned Western thinkers is seen in the reunification of science and philosophy, science and ethics and science and spiritual worldviews. We believe that if scientists, technologists, technocrats and scientific organisations and institutions continue to view natural phenomena from naturalist, positivist, materialist, empiricist, modernist, agnostic or atheistic philosophical presuppositions – which are different branches of the secular worldview – then modern science will continue to contribute to the grave crises of modern civilisation. As Muslim Believers, we subscribe to the perspective of reality, nature and life based on the doctrine of Tawḥīd (affirmation of the absolute oneness of God as the Creator, Sustainer and Sovereign of all that exists). Such a worldview is what the Noble Qur’an enunciates as the alternative to secular worldviews, and, therefore, it is high time that objective scientific minds and serious scholars, especially Muslim scientists and young science students, undertake the much needed paradigm shift in the study of natural phenomena. We believe that the real solution to the civilisational and planetary crises lies in re-establishing the Tawhidic conception of the Cosmos, Nature and Man as the metaphysical foundation of the natural sciences.

This thesis is the result of eighteen months fieldwork in western Greece. The study compares the interaction between a village community and two Greek Orthodox convents. This interaction however, is not examined along the lines of economic exchange but along the lines of symbolic interaction. Attention is centered on kinship, commensality, the symbolism of food, and on exchange and hospitality. ... [Show full abstract] It is seen that the nuns, by using images, relationships and symbols that have great significance within the secular world in order to create and portray their relationship with the divine, are able to posit their world as both an alternative to and superior from the lay world. The laity thus find themselves on the lowest rung of the religious hierarchy. They have to either reject the nuns' claims to spiritual superiority or accept their subordinate position. Most, as we shall see, do both, in an attempt to reconcile their beliefs as Orthodox and their need to justify their lives and world views. Underlying, then, the distinction between the convent and the lay world are two opposing world views. For the villagers, the supreme purpose of human life is marriage and procreation. It is through the birth of legitimate children that the house, the family and the individual may achieve a type of continuity. In contrast, for the nuns, the main aim in life is the achievement of eternal unity with the divine upon death. By willingly "sacrificing their youth" the nuns believe that salvation and eternal life after death may be assured. It is these two opposing world views which underlie the comparisons drawn and the understanding gained of the village and the convents.
