Abstract

How much of innovation is inspiration, and how much is hard work? The answer lies somewhere in the middle, says management thinker Peter Drucker. In this HBR classic from 1985, he argues that innovation is real work that can and should be managed like any other corporate function. Success is more likely to result from the systematic pursuit of opportunities than from a flash of genius. Indeed, most innovative business ideas arise through the methodical analysis of seven areas of opportunity. Within a company or industry, opportunities can be found in unexpected occurrences, incongruities of various kinds, process needs, or changes in an industry or market. Outside a company, opportunities arise from demographic changes, changes in perception, or new knowledge. There is some overlap among the sources, and the potential for innovation may well lie in more than one area at a time. Innovations based on new knowledge tend to have the greatest effect on the marketplace, but it often takes decades before the ideas are translated into actual products, processes, or services. The other sources of innovation are easier and simpler to handle, yet they still require managers to look beyond established practices, Drucker explains. The author emphasizes that innovators need to look for simple, focused solutions to real problems. The greatest praise an innovation can receive is for people to say, "That's so obvious!" Grandiose ideas designed to revolutionize an industry rarely work. Innovation, like any other endeavor, takes talent, ingenuity, and knowledge. But Drucker cautions that if diligence, persistence, and commitment are lacking, companies are unlikely to succeed at the business of innovation.

... The theory of opportunity recognition, originating from Austrian economic doctrines and based on Schumpeter's (1934) theory, suggests that new business opportunities can arise from market changes, legislation, or technology, emphasising the importance of new information in recognising opportunities (Angelsberger, Morits, Sascha Kraus, Alicia Mas-Tur &Norat Roig-Tierno, 2017), while Kirzner (1973) argues that asymmetric information in the market allows for better identification of new opportunities . It is widely accepted that opportunities can be identified through two distinct approaches -a systematic search process or exploration (Drucker, 1998). ...
... The systematic search process is a valuable addition to Drucker's (1998) framework that involves identifying opportunities by actively seeking information from external sources and leveraging internal and external knowledge to enhance a firm's existing resources (Fiet, 2007). The concept of active international opportunity recognition, which posits that entrepreneurs undertake a proactive search for information to identify international opportunities, is driven by the decisions of international entrepreneurs, as highlighted by Chetty et al. (2018), Tuomisalo (2019), and Zaefarian et al. (2016). ...

This study examines the cumulative impact of firm size, firm age, business network participation, and international opportunity recognition on the internationalisation performance of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The study population consists of 160 SMEs in the Kayseri, Inegöl, and Istanbul Organized Furniture Industry area, specifically focusing on those involved in business networks. The data was collected through a survey methodology, and the research objective was assessed using a quantitative approach in SPSS 21. The study aims to examine the gradual impact of variables on internationalisation performance. The stepwise regression in the analysis underscores the crucial impact of firm size and various aspects of international opportunity recognition on internationalisation performance. Notably, the business network's structure positively influences performance, providing optimism for firms seeking to enhance their internationalisation efforts. However, the strength of the tie subdimension of the business network does not impact performance significantly. These findings offer valuable insights for firms aiming to improve their internationalisation efforts.
... In this context, innovation generation is considered a longterm strategy aimed at meeting future market demands (Pérez-Luño, Wiklund, and Cabrera 2011). Furthermore, innovation generation enables firms to seize new opportunities or utilize existing opportunities in novel ways, thus significantly contributing to a firms' effectiveness and competitiveness (Drucker 1984;Dost and Badir 2019). ...
... Some SMEs choose to collaborate with external entities, such as laboratories and incubation centers, to generate innovation (de Jesus Pacheco et al. 2018;Malik et al. 2022;Rodríguez-Espíndola et al. 2022). When CE principles are driven by innovation generation, these strategies tend to focus on long-term results, meet evolving market needs (Pérez-Luño, Wiklund, and Cabrera 2011), and enable firms to capitalize on new opportunities or leverage existing ones in novel ways, enhancing overall effectiveness and competitiveness (Drucker 1984;Dost and Badir 2019). Additionally, SMEs in emerging economies generate resource-constrained innovations to achieve the goal of cost-effective production through resource efficiency. ...

Small and medium‐sized enterprises (SMEs) in emerging economies encounter various challenges when it comes to adopting circular economy (ce) principles due to their resource‐constrained contexts. Consequently, they often rely on innovation to facilitate the implementation of these principles. In this study, we explore the effect of source of innovation, generation or adoption, on the implementation of ce principles within SMEs in emerging economies. We also go one step further and examine the mechanism through which the source of innovation affects the implementation of ce principles. We argue that in resource‐constrained contexts, firm may use frugal innovation as a mediator in the relationship between the source of innovation and the implementation of ce principles. We collected 306 survey responses from SMEs in India and Pakistan and analyzed the data through PLS‐SEM using SMARTPLS4 software. The findings indicate that both innovation generation and innovation adoption have a positive effect on implementing ce principles, with innovation adoption showing the most significant effect. Additionally, we discovered that frugal innovation plays a partial mediator role in the relationship between innovation generation/innovation adoption and implementing ce principles. These results suggest that SMEs in emerging economies can leverage both innovation generation and adoption to advance the adoption of ce principles, fostering the development of frugal innovations in the process, which further drive the implementation of ce principles. Moreover, our findings contribute to the ongoing research debate regarding the relationship between frugal innovation and sustainability, highlighting the impact of frugal innovation on environmental sustainability.

... He explains that marketing efforts play an important role in the speed with which an innovation is adopted in the market and the reasons why product innovation leads to commercial success. Furthermore, Drucker (1984) explains that innovation is a systematic activity that must be the result of cross-functional collaboration within a company, emphasising the importance of collaboration between the research and development, marketing, and production functions. Although Prouvost (1990) and Sheth (1991) describe marketing as a source that stimulates creativity by understanding market changes and validating the new product project. ...

The uncertainty that characterises the development of new products has become one of the major concerns of management professionals and researchers. A new marketing approach focusing on the synergy between creativity, innovation, and marketing skills has underlined the importance of marketing efforts in the success of new products throughout the innovation process. In this article, we highlight the innovation process adopted by agri-food companies by examining the deployment of marketing activities in their innovation process. For this purpose, we adopted the „Stage-Gate System” (SGS) model developed by Cooper et al. (2016), a proven method for managing product development projects in the manufacturing sector. In addition, by mobilising dependency and influence matrices, we situate the place given to marketing in the new product development process while emphasising the importance of cross-functional collaboration. To carry out this research, we opted for a qualitative exploratory method at six companies, and we used a triangulation of analysis methods: content analysis, cognitive content analysis, and processual analysis. For the modelling of process mapping, we drew inspiration from the Stage-Gate System innovation process model. The stages of the innovation process and the theoretical links identified in the SGS model are confirmed by the findings of the empirical study, except that economic profitability and cost optimisation take precedence over the needs of target customers, which may restrict the success of the new product launch.

This study aimed to assess the state of the art regarding companies facing challenges of balancing the maintenance of traditions and implementing innovations. The lack of integrative concepts for this type of firm justifies the research. A systematic literature review was conducted on Scopus and Web of Science databases, analyzing data through thematic analysis. Traditions, as expressions of cultural identity and historical heritage, serve as sources of authenticity and value creation, thereby contributing to the tourism and hospitality field by enriching customer and visitor experiences and destination competitiveness. This paper establishes “Tradition‐based Firm” as an integrative concept for businesses that preserve and valorize traditions. Furthermore, it formulates theoretical propositions that enhance understanding of these firms' contexts and their challenges in balancing tradition with innovation to achieve competitive advantage. Lastly, a research agenda is suggested. For practitioners, it offers insights to build tools and strategies optimizing tradition maintenance and innovation implementation.

Similarly, management scholars focused on internal capabilities and processes driving entrepreneurial outcomes in organizations (Burgelman, 1984) and innovation, change, and bringing new combinations of resources to market. The famed management consultant, educator, and author Drucker described it as the "effort to create purposeful, focused change in an enterprise's economic or social potential" (Drucker, 2002). Others still have framed it as a process of opportunity recognition in which the entrepreneur must spot asymmetries or "inefficiencies" to capitalize on (Shane & Venkataraman, 2000) or as a process of "enacting" and "doing." ...

As generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) emerges as the latest technological gold rush, this preliminary study examines how entrepreneurs made sense of this transformative moment in the early months of ChatGPT. Through semi‐structured interviews with entrepreneurs adopting GenAI, observations of AI creators in Silicon Valley, and computational analysis of our qualitative data, as well as Twitter discourse, we reveal a complex reality beneath the media hype. While Twitter discourse initially showed entrepreneurs aligning with techno‐optimistic expectations of their imagined audience, our ethnographic data exposed deeper tensions around job displacement, bias, privacy, alignment, and the more significant ethical and societal implications. The contrast between publicly oriented Twitter data and self‐reflective ethnographic data exemplifies the complex ways that entrepreneurs wrestle with their identity as innovators—a tension between public displays of optimism and internal grappling with uncertainty around AI. Drawing on Madsen et al.’s concept of productive friction, we employ this framework in two complementary ways: as an analytical lens for understanding entrepreneurs’ cognitive dissonance and as a methodological principle that deliberately generates tensions through the use of traditional and computational approaches. We argue that these contradictions serve as constructive catalysts for more thoughtful innovation and adoption of Gen AI by forcing critical examination of assumptions and practices. Our mixed‐methods approach, therefore, demonstrates a way to capture, analyze, and understand emerging productive frictions surrounding implications for entrepreneurship while contributing to emerging techno‐anthropological discourse and approaches for studying technological transformation.

Innovation is the engine of the development of organizations, it becomes a necessity in a world characterized by volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity (i.e VUCA World). Innovation covers products, services, and managerial practices by bringing novelty into the traditional management model making organization more resilient and agile. There are many studies related to managerial innovations however there is no devoted research to their intrinsic features, making thus their comprehension and adoption difficult. Also, to our knowledge there is no dedicated research investigating how the learning organization embodies a form of managerial innovation. Through a qualitative methodology centered on the content analysis of existing literature, our research aims to fill this gap by studying the main characteristics of managerial innovation, pointing out concrete managerial innovation practices, and examining the learning organization as an exemplary case of study. Our findings reveal the intangible, dynamic, and complex characteristics of managerial innovation, the impact of internal and external factors on the innovativeness of organizations and the significant overlap between the attributes of innovation and the learning organization ones. This research has both theoretical and practical implications, it provides an integrative theoretical framework of innovation and learning organization and serves as a foundation and practical tool for managers to adopt new practices by considering learning organization within the scope of managerial innovation. The study proposes a framework based on theoretical lens related to the learning organization and the diffusion of innovation, future research could develop a comprehensive empirical validation of the framework across diverse contexts.

A firm’s inventory of inventions plays a critical role in driving new product development (NPD). This study examines how the combination of knowledge in inventive activities influences NPD. Drawing on theories of the knowledge base, complex network and knowledge exchange, we examine the impact of knowledge network heterogeneity on NPD, while also investigating the mediating role of R&D collaboration and the moderating effect of academic knowledge spillovers. To empirically test the proposed hypotheses, we collected a panel sample of 622 firms from 2001 to 2016. The results show a U-shaped relationship between knowledge network heterogeneity and NPD, with R&D collaboration mediating this relationship. Furthermore, regional academic knowledge spillovers related to university-industry collaboration (UIC) amplify the U-shaped effect. These findings contribute to the NPD, knowledge base and knowledge exchange literature, providing strategic recommendations for manufacturing firms to effectively leverage knowledge combinations and highlight the significance of integrating R&D collaboration and academic spillovers to promote NPD.

Both as power and as a resource knowledge is strategically important for individuals and enterprises. The third industrial revolution is based on knowledge which changes the way an individual, an enterprise or even a nation can create wealth and prosperity. All together we can say that knowledge is so important to each organization. So, knowledge is considered as an effective resource for organizations and individuals to survive. However, individuals usually make use of their experience and prior knowledge when they encounter problems and solve similar problems. These managerial predictive behaviours may endanger an organization which is in a competitive environment and this common routine problemsolving strategy is called “Knowledge Inertia”. The aim of this research is to see the effect of knowledge inertia on the relationship between knowledge sharing capabilities and organizational strategic learning capabilities. This research was designed as quantitative study. The sample size is 150 teachers in ZEO Valikamam in Jaffna District. Sample is collected through convenience sampling method. The collected data analysis using the SPSS version 20.0 software. According to the results obtained through the data analysis, the knowledge inertia has negative relationship between knowledge sharing capabilities and organizational strategic learning capabilities. As well as the knowledge sharing capabilities and organizational strategic learning capabilities have positive relationship. On other hand it can be found that Knowledge inertia plays a role as a mediator between knowledge sharing capabilities and organizational strategic learning capabilities.

What causes sustainable innovation has been the subject of recent academic and policy debate. This study examines whether the relationship between firm characteristics and sustainable innovation differs in European and non‐European countries with different institutional contexts. Drawing on institutional theory and leveraging data from the 2020 Eurobarometer survey involving 15,000 interviews in 36 European and non‐European countries, multilevel econometric analysis of firms in these countries reveals a robust connection between sustainable innovation and firm‐specific factors and institutional quality. We combine the firm‐level data from Eurobarometer 2020 with multiple sources of country‐level data to measure the impact of institutional quality on ‐sustainable innovation. Using a multilevel logistic regression model the findings indicate that small and medium‐sized enterprises tend to develop more sustainable innovations, and countries with superior institutional quality and institutional trust foster an environment conducive to sustainable innovation. The paper concludes with implications for theory and policy, suggesting how governments can influence the growth and development of sustainable innovation.

Literature studies focusing on entrepreneurial orientation or openness to innovation mainly focus on large enterprises and multinational companies. Micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) are under-researched in Europe, however, their contribution to employment, balance of trade, and GDP is broadly acknowledged among scholars. Experiences gathered through a qualitative study conducted with owner managers of enterprises of all size categories preceded as well as helped to better establish and design our quantitative survey as recommended in various studies in international literature. This paper aims to examine the disparities in entrepreneurial orientation and openness to innovation between three separate regions in Hungary. Analyses were based on discovering statistically significant differences in terms of the region and the size category of companies. The study applied principal component analyses, Kruskal-Wallis, and Mann-Whitney nonparametric tests.

We propose that entrepreneurial alertness plays a critical role in translating creativity into positive entrepreneurial outcomes. We conducted a multilevel meta-analysis, and our findings suggest that entrepreneurial alertness channels creativity toward more promising opportunities, innovation, and firm performance. By integrating Schumpeterian and Kirznerian views on entrepreneurship, we provide a pragmatic view that accounts for creativity and alertness. We also provide practical implications for entrepreneurs.

Of the previously mentioned criteria, creativity is the one that is most closely related to the sources "that were not explicitly designed to support the measurement of innovation" as per the Oslo Manual. Such criteria can be thought of as being the sources for company innovation: unforeseen events, disparities, operational requirements, and shifts in industry and market dynamics (Drucker, 2002). Innovation, even though desired, exists at the intersection of interests manifested by both the business environment and legal authorities (regional or national authorities) (Sehleanu et al, 2021). ...

The current business environment is characterized by high competition between companies as well as global challenges and growing technological progress. Businesses must constantly adapt to changes in the business environment, changes in the market environment and the constantly changing requirements of customers. The purpose of this article is to point out the major gaps across eight former communist East-European countries in what regards the innovation: Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia. In order to compare the trends in hat regards innovation in Eastern European countries we have first collected data for four innovation indicators for each East European country, separately for each field of activity. We have computed variation coefficients that revealed the fields of activity with the highest and/or lowest gaps across selected countries. Our conclusion is that Eastern Europe is increasingly becoming a hotspot for innovation, with countries in the region making significant progress in various aspects of innovation-driven development. By leveraging their strengths, addressing challenges, and capitalizing on opportunities, Eastern European countries can further enhance their innovation performance, competitiveness, and sustainable growth in the global innovation landscape.

Digitization in tourism represents a big challenge. Worldwide initiatives are directed towards its application in the service of the industry. Already at the present time, their portfolio is quite broad and gives opportunities for the use of these innovations. The aim of the empirical study was to find out, analytically evaluate and describe the perception of the attractiveness of selected digital tools in hotel rooms and the interest in them. Through questionnaire research as a tool of quantitative research, it approximates the results on a sample of Slovak respondents, who participate in tourism and use the accommodation services regularly. The results point to the fact that digital tools harmonize the offer, but do not represent a highly attractive element without which the tourists could not imagine their stay in accommodation establishments.

Contributing to ongoing conversations about the central role of creativity in entrepreneurship, we propose that creativity leads to positive entrepreneurial outcomes through a crucial mediating mechanism: entrepreneurial alertness. We conducted a multilevel meta-analysis of 92 published studies with 209 effect sizes extracted and a cumulative sample size of 927,615 participants. Our findings suggest that alertness fine-tunes creativity and channels it toward more promising opportunities, innovation, and firm performance. Integrating Schumpeterian and Kirznerian perspectives, this study provides a pragmatist view of entrepreneurship and paves the way for further theorizing the association between creativity and alertness in explaining entrepreneurial outcomes.

Purpose: The idea of the paper came from the observation that small wholesaler managed by Portuguese – Eurocash has been able to capture most of the segment of “mom-and-pop” and middle-sized Polish stores. Its sales have been growing when at the same time the global company MAKRO Cash & Carry, which as a first mover was very successful, is losing the market. So, the attempt has been made to analyze Eurocash success in the framework of existing theories of developing competitive advantage on international markets. Design/methodology/approach: The concepts of dynamic capabilities and entrepreneurship theory are shortly described due to the fact that they were found out as the most appropriate to discuss the issue of gaining competitive advantage on Polish wholesale market. The longitudinal case study, in which international strategies of MAKRO Cash & Carry and Eurocash are compared, is presented Findings: Dynamic capabilities are path dependent so when the company wants to sustain advantage on the foreign market characterized by a different structure than is prevailing in its other international markets it could face problems. Such a market is the chance for the entrepreneur which sees the market opportunities and could size them. Originality/value: Paper contributes to the theory of international entrepreneurship showing that that entrepreneurs could be successful on foreign emerging markets using knowledge learned when their domestics markets were exposed to similar changes. It shows how wholesalers and small shops could successfully compete on FMCG market in contemporary economy, characterized by the growing role of networks. Keywords: retailing, wholesaling, dynamic capabilities, international entrepreneurship, Poland. Category of the paper: Conceptual paper.

This chapter attempts a soft landing into the realm of R&D and innovation, exploring their fundamental roles in driving the development of new products, services, and breakthrough technologies. It introduces key concepts and frameworks, including the R&D uncertainty cone, technology readiness levels (TRLs), the funnel model, open innovation, and methodologies like stage-gate, lean, and agile. The chapter also contrasts academia’s open-ended research process with the structured, risk-driven R&D funnels in industry, highlighting the distinct challenges and goals of each. Through practical insights and examples, the chapter addresses how organizations bridge the “valley of death,” ensuring promising technologies transition from research to commercialization. Concluding with a practical skeleton for managing R&D functions, it underscores the importance of optimizing R&D practices to maximize returns on investment, given the significant global expenditure on innovation, currently at 2.2% of GDP.

Bu araştırma, kapsamı ve ulusal-uluslararası karşılaştırmalı yaklaşımı ile literatürdeki diğer çalışmalardan ayrılmaktadır./ The aim of this study is to evaluate the impact and role of innovation on the library services of foundation universities. Data regarding the services of two foundation uni-versity libraries from Turkey and abroad were obtained through interview method and analyzed using descriptive content analysis. The findings from the study indicate that the diversity of services in international exam-ples is greater compared to those in Turkey. While both librarians and users demonstrate a good level of interest and knowledge in innovation, world libraries allocate budgets for innovative service production and expect their librarians to engage in this direction. World libraries conduct periodic training on innovative thinking and production. All libraries follow the services of other libraries and the majority of innovative services consist of technological services. Additionally, it was found that libraries also serve as therapy and relaxation centers. As a result of the study, libraries possess a wide range of innovative services alongside basic services. The concept of innovation is better understood and implemented among librarians. Although there are similarities between Turkey and world examples, there are also differences in favor of world libraries. This research stands out from other studies in the literature due to its scope and national-international comparative approach.

This paper, based on research undertaken during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic, evaluates Guinea’s leadership infrastructure from independence in 1958 until the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. It determines that Guinea’s leadership can be characterized by a coercive social contract. The paper uses leadership theory to determine the underlying issue to Guinea’s continuous stagnant development. It highlights that leadership emergence is deficient due to the inability of persons and institutions to respond to the true causes of Guinean’s malaise, thus demonstrating an inability to build mutuality between the population and national leaders. The failure, then, to build true mutuality with the population and advance common goals led to a perpetuation of the coercive social contract, which historically has proven unsustainable and has resulted in the swift and violent departures of successive regimes. The paper specifically focused on leadership in response to crisis, during the 2013 Ebola and 2019 Covid-19 pandemic to demonstrate that whilst crisis response did take place, leadership was lacking and thus a continued cycle of re-enforcement of the status quo at the detriment of the needs of the population was maintained.

Enhancing the functionality of a nation’s economy in the current globalization era requires a dynamic and adaptable entrepreneurial orientation attitude and mindset that can spur innovative ideas, business spirit, and ensure sustain operations in a volatile environment. In this study, seven distinct business sectors - agriculture, construction, schools, real estate, manufacturing, finance and health, in Lagos State, Nigeria, were surveyed cross- sectional to examine entrepreneurial orientation and the development of selected family-owned SMEs: way forward to JAPA syndrome. Two parts of the questionnaire -biographical information and research questions are used to collect data. On the other hand, 217 respondents made up the sample size proportionately, with 31 participants chosen from each study focus. Data analysis was conducted using Pearson correlation statistical tool. According to the study, pro-activeness has a weak but positive correlation with SMEs development. In contrast, the development of family-owned businesses is greatly impacted by innovativeness and autonomy. To end the JAPA syndrome and translate it into economic strengths and opportunities, the government should intensify and vigorously encourage entrepreneurial orientation practices by providing good infrastructure amenities that can increase the development of SMEs and addressing emerging obstacles such as low productivity, unemployment, and insecurity caused by idleness, which stem from the threatening volatile environment. It is recommended that, Proactive measures be used to advance the development and survival of SMEs, and innovation should be pursued as a guiding principle for capacity and adaptability to manage the complexity of the environment. Additionally, business autonomy is considered a necessary component of success, and dynamic orientation should be incorporated to achieve organizational growth and development. The study highlights the importance of developing applied tools to assess the economic impact of the development of corporate entrepreneurship within established business organisations. It was found that preliminary studies focus on the positive impact of the application of the entrepreneurial management style on the performance of business organisations, but there is a lack of specific proposals for assessing the impact of the implementation of employees' internal business initiatives on organisational performance. The financial model for assessing the economic impact of the implementation of innovative solutions, ideas and projects proposed by employees and the creation of new business units based on them has been substantiated. The results of the authors' calculations are presented, which confirm the practical possibility of applying the proposed model and demonstrate the positive impact of the development of corporate entrepreneurship and the creation of new business units on the value of the business organisation as a whole.

Succession is a major threat to the sustainable growth of family businesses. This study proposes that the growth of a family business is a co-evolutionary process involving multiple memes, and a family business undergoes succession through memes. To address this exploratory question, the author analyzes entrepreneurial behavior in five well-known century-old Western family enterprises based on grounded theory, and constructs a deoxyribonucleic acid model of the family business. The model not only reveals the most prominent memes in the complex meme system of a family business, but also illustrates the connectivity of different strengths among the organizational memes. The implications and recommendations derived from this study indicate that family businesses should develop specialization and succession capabilities through memes, and explore different means of innovation and adaptation to realize cross-generational growth.
