The Biofield Hypothesis: Its Biophysical Basis and Role in Medicine

Authors:

Abstract

This paper provides a scientific foundation for the biofield: the complex, extremely weak electromagnetic field of the organism hypothesized to involve electromagnetic bioinformation for regulating homeodynamics. The biofield is a useful construct consistent with bioelectromagnetics and the physics of nonlinear, dynamical, nonequilibrium living systems. It offers a unifying hypothesis to explain the interaction of objects or fields with the organism, and is especially useful toward understanding the scientific basis of energy medicine, including acupuncture, biofield therapies, bioelectromagnetic therapies, and homeopathy. The rapid signal propagation of electromagnetic fields comprising the biofield as well as its holistic properties may account for the rapid, holistic effects of certain alternative and complementary medical interventions.
... In that context, it was observed how the therapy consisting in the administration of Extremely Low-Frequency Electromagnetic Fields (ELF-MFs), falling within the scope of Bioresonance Therapy (BT) and Quantum Medicine (QM) [14][15][16][17][18], was effective in improving musculoskeletal pain in the patients studied and, at the same time, it normalized the values of Resistance and Reactance detected in the sample through BIA [14]. BT, also applied in the form of Ion Cyclotron Resonance (ICR), is essentially based on the use of ELF-MFs, with frequencies typically in the order of a few Hz or kHz and intensities in the order of a few μT which, in pathological situations, positively interfere with the altered magnetic biofield of the human body [19], determining a balancing of the suffering physiological and metabolic patterns. These therapeutic effects of QM techniques such as the ICR-BT seems to be mediated by its ability to counteract oxidative stress, reduce inflammation levels and increase cellular metabolism and the production of mitochondrial ATP [14][15][16][17][18]. ...

Background/Objectives: Chronic Musculoskeletal Pain (CMP) is a rather widespread and heterogeneous health problem whose evaluated framework can be of fundamental importance to intervene effectively and rapidly on the causes and consequences of the pathology, as well as on the dominant symptom of pain. One of the evaluation parameters that is increasingly gaining consensus in the assessment of the health status is the Phase Angle (PA), obtained through bioelectrical monitoring with body Bioimpedance Analysis (BIA); Methods: To evaluate the reliability of the PA as a tool for assessing CMP, data from 53 patients, with an average age of 60 years, were observed. They underwent assessment of perceived pain using the Numeric Pain Rating Scale (NPRS) and of the body's bioelectrical status using the BIA, before the beginning (T0) and after the end (T1) of a cycle of 10 treatment sessions with Ion Cyclotron Resonance - Bioresonance Therapy (ICR-BT); Results: At the end of the observation we detected a significant reduction in the NPRS value and a positive but not statistically significant increase in the PA value. Furthermore, given the misalignment in the significance of the positive trend of the two observed variables, it was not possible to define a clear correlation between pain and the bioimpedenziometric values of patients. Conclusions: The study confirms the efficacy of ICR-BT as a therapeutic tool in the presence of CMP. However, it was not possible to define a clear reliability of PA as a diagnostic tool for CMP. Although PA has shown a promising trend during the study, its non-significant correlation to the pain trend would suggest investigating the topic more deeply, through larger and better structured experimental studies.
... This knowledge in uence about an individual's bio eld, from a more holistic perspective derived from the theory of CAM, increased the identi cation and understanding of possible research biases associated with the biomedical application of electromagnetism. Such knowledge allowed the valuation of the psychological aspects that can in uence the result of a treatment that, in addition to including psychological health, value the placebo effect (which should be stimulated) and the nocebo effect (which should be discouraged) [17]. ...

In the face of ongoing scientific debates over biomedical electromagnetic devices like TENS, TMS, tDCS, and PEMF, this study leverages the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) to establish a ranking system that aids in the selection process for clinical research purposes. By adopting a structured Work Package Methodology, our interdisciplinary team dissected the research into six distinct phases, ranging from management and supervision to the development of guiding principles and the application of AHP for device evaluation. This approach led to the identification of nine critical selection criteria, including the minimization of external electromagnetic influences, device multifunctionality, cost-effectiveness, and the ability to induce relaxation and well-being in users. Notably, our analysis revealed that a hypothetical 'NEW' device outperformed existing technologies, suggesting a significant opportunity for innovation in this space. The findings advocate for enhanced translational research to bridge the theoretical and practical applications of electromagnetic technology in medicine. We propose that future endeavors should focus on creating new electromagnetic devices that align with the identified criteria, thereby improving the accuracy and reliability of clinical research in the field of biomedical electromagnetics.
... This new and mostly unexplored medical specialty is based on innovative discoveries regarding the physics of water, the coherence of cellular interactions inside tissues and the interaction of ultra-weak magnetic fields with the ionic systems of the cells themselves [38,39]. Human cellular radiations are weak, but they are still also messengers, elements of cohesion and coordinators of the body's systems, in accordance with the definition of Biofields [40]. This property is called "coherence" [41] and defines a complex network of functional connections inside living beings [42]. ...

Background and Objectives: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is an invasive and potentially disabling syndrome characterized by a multitude of symptoms capable of reducing the quality of life of patients. Among the most disabling symptoms of IBS is certainly physical pain, which manifests itself mainly at the abdominal level but can also appear in other areas of the body, particularly in the form of chronic low-back pain (CLBP). Among the non-invasive methods of treating organ-specific pathologies and organ-related musculoskeletal problems, the use of Bioresonance Therapy (BT)—based on the administration of self-modulating Extremely Low-Frequency Electromagnetic Fields, capable of determining a rebalance of bio-electrical and metabolic activity in the presence of various functional alterations—is currently gaining acceptance. Therefore, we decided to monitor results obtained from patients suffering from IBS and CLBP subjected to a cycle of treatments with BT. Materials and Methods: We monitored 20 patients (12 women and 8 men, average age of 51 years) suffering from CLBP and other visceral symptoms related to IBS. Patients were monitored through the use of the Bristol Stool Form Scale (BSFS), the Fecal Calprotectin test and the Short-Form Health Survey 36 (SF-36), collected before (T0) and after (T1) the execution of the cycle of treatments. They undertook a treatment protocol consisting of eight sessions of BT carried out over about a month. Results: At the end of the treatments with BT, it was possible to observe a general and significant improvement in all the parameters observed, as well as a close inversely proportional correlation between the Calprotectin values detected and the quality of life experienced by the patients in relation to their perceived IBS symptoms. Conclusions: Overall, our pilot study would seem to suggest a potential beneficial effect of BT in modulating organic and musculoskeletal symptoms derived from IBS.

The aim of this study was to investigate the efficacy of pulsed electromagnetic field therapy on vascular lower limb ulcers healing and microcirculation. Methods: Forty patients (24 females and 16 males) between 45 and 65 years old with vascular leg ulcers were randomly assigned into two equal groups of 20. Both groups received their routine conventional therapy; additionally, Group (A): (N=20) received pulsed electromagnetic field therapy at a frequency of 12.5 Hz, 20 min per session, day after day for 2 months, While group (B) (N=20) received 2 months of routine conventional therapy only. Methods of evaluation were Ulcer Surface Area (USA), Ankle Brachial Pressure Index (ABPI) and Visual Analogue Scale (VAS). Results: Results showed significant improvement (P ⩽ 0.05) in USA (3.36±1.3), ABPI (0.85±0.04) and VAS (2.2±0.83) after 2 months of pulsed electromagnetic field therapy (Post 2) for group (A) rather than group (B) as manifested by decreasing pain, ulcer surface area and increasing ankle brachial pressure index. Conclusion: Pulsed electromagnetic field therapy is effective in accelerating healing, improving microcirculation and reliving pain of vascular leg ulcers.
... The foundation of subtle energy therapies is that the body comprises energy fields that can be regulated to aid in healing. Theories of cooperativity that explain how a system can transition from one stable state to another via different mechanisms and at different speeds, such as phase transitions, hysteresis, and avalanche effects, can be induced from weak signals through an amplification effect that may take place suddenly or gradually [23][24][25]. We believe such an amplification effect may be generated via a specific combination of subtle signals. ...

The prevalence of neurodegenerative disorders is rising as the population ages, and many ailments, such as depression, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, autism spectrum disorder, and multiple sclerosis, have intricate underlying mechanisms that are still poorly understood. The Neuron Foundry Mach 8 is a multi-modal neuro-supportive energy therapy device designed to treat neurodegenerative disorders through daily sessions. This device proposes to deliver safe and controlled energy therapy through multiple therapeutic pathways, including stimulating brain mitochondrial energy, supporting homeostasis within the brain’s immune system, increasing melatonin production within neuronal mitochondria, and triggering cellular communication through the brain’s white matter. By combining these unique energy-based treatments, this device holds promising potential for slowing, stopping, reversing, or at least reducing the effects of neurodegenerative diseases.

Erectile dysfunction is a common disorder found in men, which occurs due to multiple factors such as psychogenic, hormonal imbalance, and neurovascular disturbances. The present investigation was undertaken to examine the effect of a Consciousness Energy Healing based DMEM medium on the Human Endothelial Hybrid Cell Line (EA. hy926) to evaluate the level of cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP). The test item (DMEM medium) was divided into three parts, first part received a one-time Consciousness Energy Healing Treatment by a renowned Biofield Energy Healer, Alice Branton and was labeled as the one-time Biofield Energy Treated (BT-I) DMEM, while second part received the two-times the Biofield Energy Treatment and is denoted as BT-II DMEM. The third part did not receive any treatment and defined as the untreated DMEM group. The level of cGMP for the inhibition of PDE-5 enzyme was assessed using cGMP ELISA assay kit (colorimetric). Sildenafil citrate, used as positive control, which showed a significant increase of cGMP levels in Ea. hy926 cells. The one-time Biofield Energy Healing Treated DMEM (BT-I) showed 29.92% alteration, while the two-times Biofield Energy Healing Treated DMEM (BT-II) showed a significantly (p≤0.001) increased level of intracellular cGMP by 307.09% in Ea. hy926 cells compared to the untreated DMEM group. Overall, experimental data suggested that the two-times Biofield Treated DMEM showed a significantly improved level of cGMP compared with the one-time Biofield Treated DMEM group. Therefore, data indicated that the Biofield Energy Healing Treatment can be used to treat erectile dysfunction along with other sexual disorders such as orgasmic disorders, female sexual arousal disorder, fetishistic disorder, frotteuristic disorder, hypoactive sexual desire disorder, sex addiction, sexual masochism and sadism, vaginismus, voyeuristic disorder, premature or delayed ejaculation.

The mind can have a major impact on your well-being and management of diseases. Complementary therapies may be able to address the psychological and physical side effects that radiation therapy, androgen deprivation therapy, or surgery may cause in the treatment of prostate cancer. A considerable segment of cancer patients employ supplementary medicine or therapy. For the purpose of treating and preventing disease as well as optimizing health, an integrative approach to cancer management integrates conventional medicine with evidence-based alternative therapies and medications. Its tenet is to treat the patient as a whole, not just the illness. It uses adjunct technologies that can help the doctor assess therapy effectiveness and diagnose early carcinogenesis. Numerous factors, including some that patients may largely control and that oncologists may be able to advise on, like stress, poor nutrition, lack of physical activity, sleep disturbances, and vitamin D deficiency, can contribute to the development of cancer. Better results and the patient’s general health may result from an integrative approach to tackling these concerns. Supplementation, herbal medicine, traditional medicine, stress-reduction techniques, and physical therapy are examples of evidence-based alternative medicine procedures. Tailored specifically for the patient, these can also aid in addressing the indications and symptoms connected to cancer and conventional cancer treatment. Tailored treatments for South African patients can improve outcome and quality of life.

This article provides clinicians and other medical professionals with an introduction to the related fields of Sound Therapy and Music Medicine, outlining some of the many biological mechanisms advantageously activated by these modern modalities. The umbrella term for audible sound therapies is often popularly referred to as «Vibrational Medicine», embracing the energetic (vibrational) interconnectedness of the mind-body system. The information provided is intended for physicians, psychologists, music therapists, nurses, integrative medicine practitioners, and wellness practitioners utilizing the therapeutic potential of Vibrational Medicine. Since the body is comprised of vibrational energy, a wide variety of energetic modalities are available to support the patient’s physiology, and the article describes some of the many physiological mechanisms initiated by Sound Therapy and Music Medicine, perhaps most importantly, pain mediation, achieved by locally applied specific sound frequencies. Other mechanisms, such as vagal stimulation, are described and achieved by experiencing specific sound frequencies or music via headphones. The article is in two parts: Part 1 was published in the past issue (3-2023) of the «Medicine and Art» journal (https://doi.org/10.60042/2949-2165-2023-1-3-60-93). It provides a short history of therapeutic sound, followed by definitions of Music Therapy, Music Medicine, and Sound Therapy, followed by sections on some of the many biological mechanisms activated by full body immersion in music or specific sound frequencies, including an introduction to pain mediation by sound. Part 2 includes breaking the pain-spasm pain cycle in spinal injury by sound; pain relief and anxiety relief by acupressure and sonopuncture; oxygen-driven healing by sound; musical stimulation of the immune system; sonic stimulation of the vagus nerve via headphones and by vocalizations; and last, a look into the future of vibrational medicine.

The molecular signal of PMA can be electronically transmitted and modulate neutrophil reactive oxygen metabolite (ROM) production as if PMA itself was added to the cells [1]. Experiments reported here were done blind or open at INSERM U 332, ICGM, Paris.Transmission was performed via an especially designed amplifier connected to two coils [2]. The source tube containing PMA (1 0M) or vehicle was placed on the input coil at RT, and target cells (Imillion per ml) on the output coil at 37°C in a humidified incubator. The amplifier was then turned on for 15 min transmission time and cells were then incubated for up to 45 min before measurement of cytochrome c reduction. Three or four amplifiers were used simultaneously for each experiment. An increase in ROM production was observed immediately after PMA transmission: (over vehicle transmission), 56.6 -f 15-5%, mean 4- SEM, and up to 60 min: 38.7 + 14.8, n - 9. Peak PMA transmission effect varied among individuals. Transmission of 4 -phorbol 12,13-dibutyrate, an inactive PMA analogue, did not stimulate neutropbil ROM production. The effect of PMA transmission was inhibited when 1) the amplifier was switched off: 42±8% vs -1.8±1.4%, n = 6, and 2) the selective protein kinase C inhibitor GF109203X was added to the cells (8 M) before PMA transmission. These results, together with those previously reported, suggest that molecules emit signals than can be transferred to cells by artificial physical means in a manner that seems specific to the source molecules,.

"Energy" medicine modalities such as acupuncture probably do not act on the body-mind by virtue of their energy content, which is minute. An extended concept of information, meaning "that which informs," is proposed as a new way of thinking about how these medical modalities may work at various levels of organization in humans. This concept includes electromagnetic bioinformation, but may also go beyond it to include information conveyed by other fields more subtle than electromagnetic, which may be intimately involved with life. Research from bioelectromagnetics and an extended concept of information in biology also offer the gift of new questions for research. Further development along these lines may be fruitful toward a scientific foundation of acupuncture and other energy medicine modalities.

A brief discussion is given of a set of anomalous experimental phenomena that are inexplicable based only on the four accepted forces oper- ating in the physical universe. Possible explanations require defining the ex- istence of subtle energies. Using a quantum mechanical description, the seat of subtle energy functioning is traced to the vacuum state with magnetic vec- tor potential assuming the role of bridge between the subtle energies and physical energies. A brief discussion is given of how we might reliably detect subtle energies and a zeroth order model of the subtle domains as substruc- ture for the vacuum state is given.

A complete, operational system is proposed to exist in living organisms which controls such basic functions as growth, healing and biological cycles. The system is described in anatomical detail. It functions as a data transmission system in an analog fashion using varying levels of d.c. as its signal. The system interlocks physically with the nervous system and is postulated to be its percursor. There are two electrochemical links of great significance in the operation of the system. One is between the d.c. system and the nervous system; the other is between the d.c. system and all body cells. The concept explains all of the diverse effects reported for the biological effects of applied electrical currents including: electrical anesthesia, electrical growth control and electro-acupuncture. It also furnishes a testable hypothesis for predicting other effects that might be of clinical significance.

The concept of homeostasis has served as a major building block, if not the cornerstone, of family theory and family therapy. Designed to account for the perceived stability of systems (and symptoms), homeostasis is an epistemologically flawed concept that has repetitively been used in the service of dualistic, animistic, and vitalistic interpretations of systems. Accordingly, homeostasis has led to quirky clinical formulations and a great deal of fuzzy theorizing. This paper contends that the notion of homeostasis is fundamentally inconsistent with systemic epistemology and should be replaced with the more compatible concept of coherence. Whereas homeostasis is a heuristic concept that is not part of a more encompassing theory, the concept of coherence is inseparable from the epistemology in which it is embedded.
