We want to be heritage: discussions on the re-creation of Qhapaq Ñan as a project

Goal: This research belongs to my posdoctoral fellow at trAndeS Programme (FU Berlin-PUCP).
The re-creation of the Qhapaq Ñan - Andean Road System evidences its insertion to the world of cultural politics. The actions undertaken by the Peruvian State, among other actors, to insert it onto the World Heritage List, demonstrates uses of expert knowledge for classify landscapes, inhabitants, and forms of living. This case discusses inequalities of heritagization and highlights power relations of actors associated with UNESCO who can determine what becomes heritage and how it could be used. This process generates expectations on new forms of tourism in rural Andean communities and provides evidence on economic and politic values of heritage.
