The railroad heritage of Andalucía – South of Spain – through the application of a Geographic Information System. Strategies for management

Goal: Between 1848 and the mid-twentieth century, the railroad played a key role in the economic development of Spain, not only in the territorial configuration, but also in the social, political and cultural aspects. In Andalucia, the railroad has had, since its first line in 1854, an important influence on the urban growth, development and rise of cities, resulting in new urban structures which are, in our days, one of the major problems faced in the cities.

This research proposes a spatial and historical analysis of the railroad heritage of Andalucía based on a Geographic Information System (GIS), which aims to generate a record of the railroad process in this area that started as a pioneer in Spain in 1829. It seeks to propose strategies for the management of this heritage as a cultural, social and economic resource and also for the development of activities aimed at strengthening the relationship between society -territory-heritages.

The railway process (1854-1940) in Andalucia contributed to the formation of a new territorial structure. The railway, built and used, was also a means of production: business networks, flows of raw materials and people, energy technologies that shaped the land and also were shaped by it. In this sense, the railroad, produced and producer of various changes, cannot be understood without its productive forces, including knowledge and technology, the working class, the superstructure of society, the State and nether can't be separated from nature, where the topography and hydrology played important role. These factors are combined, juxtaposed , are interspersed, engage and sometimes collide, creating what might be called the " rail rhizome", a hyper complex space, intervened and shaped by a diversity of actors. This paper presents a new interpretation of the Andalucia railway heritage through the application of a Geographic Information System (GIS), which based on the historical creation of a spatial data infrastructure (SDI) of railways in Andalucia, open and expands its spatiotemporal vision. Key words: RAILWAY HERITAGE, GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEM, SPACE PRODUCTION, GIS, HISTORIC SPATIAL DATA INFRASTRUCTURE

In this paper we present our research´s progresses of the Wine Landscape of the city of Puerto de Santa María, in Cadiz - Spain. We defend the idea that understanding the evolution of the city as a system it will provide a stimulating integrated vision which allow us to achieve not only a new interpretation of architecture but also its social, cultural and economic dimensions.
