The effect of a 6-weeks progressive resistance and nutrition intervention in women with pre-sarcopenia and sarcopenia - A pilot study

Goal: Long-term goals:
Sarcopenia is already getting more and more diagnosed and treated, but still the diagnostic isn´t always consistent and not consequently applied in practice. To make some steps towards a wider publicity and apllication in everyday practice, on one hand we compare classical diagnostic tools with alternative, less expensive diagnostic tools as every family doctor has an US and a chair and maybe a stopwatch available and therefore could diagnose sarcopenia.

On the other hand we want to achieve a wider prescription of sarcopenia treatment, as it would be easy to treat and prevent with the combination of resistance training and nutrition supplementation.

Short-term goals after a 6-weeks progressive resistance training with ankle weights and daily intake of 20 g protein, 4 g leucine and 5 g creatine:
- improve muscle strength, function and mass
- change in sarcopenia status (sarcopenia--> pre-sarcopenia; pre-
sarcopenia--> normal)
- increase quality of life
- compare classical sarcopenia diagnostic tools with alternative diagnostic tools like Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA) with Ultrasound (US) measures for the assessment of muscle mass, and the Muscle Quality Index (MQI) based on the 10 timed Chair Stand Test with grip strength and the 5 timed Chair Stand Test.
