The concept of GIS ecology

Goal: I’m developing the concept of GIS ecology as a cognitive tool. We might learn more about GIS if research was oriented towards the epistemic concept (Hannon 2019) of GIS practices and their environments. There’s two lines of inquiry here: the concept of GIS and the unit/environment relationships that sustain GIS practices. As an abstract entity, the concept of GIS is meaningful in the way it mediates “…between thought and language, on the one hand, and referents, on the other” (Margolis, 2019). In an ecological sense, this sort of thought is “…a kind of intellectual niche construction that appropriates and integrates material resources around one into preexisting cognitive structures” (Wilson, 2008). A way to study GIS might be case study accounts of the self-organization of the concept of GIS.
