Goal: Over the last 10 and more years, I have been using debate analysis (factorial co-citation analysis) as a tool to quickly grasp unknown (or even known) scientific territory which I touched with my main project "Two steps to modernity". Now that the main conclusions from the modernity-project are drawn, it is time to propagate this helpful small tool of debate analysis, as well - it has helped me so much, I am sure it will help others as well.

Today, I have uploaded the "How to" recipe paper that describes the usage of the debates macro. Thanks to Maja Präger for testing a former version!

This paper describes how debate analysis, the factorial co-citation analysis, is done using the debates macro available for Stata. It guides the reader through the preparation and installation of the necessary files and programs, gives hints for useful search strategies for finding appropriate datasets in the Web of Knowledge, helps through data download and processing, describes how to convert the macro output into a readable table, and guides you into the practical understanding of debates and their usage for individual work.
