Nowadays Personal Learning Environments (PLEs) are described as the use of different social software tools for learning and teaching. The use of common web browsers often is a precondition to fulfil the requirements of social software tools. In this publication a new perspective as well as a couple of prototypes is presented to allow a more independent solution in this context. Using the new JavaFX technology so called widgets are implemented which can be used on different devices as well as different operating systems. Furthermore also the web browser can be replaced by a browser instance. It can be summarized that through the use of widgets the learning environment of the future can be more individualized and personalized.

Graz University of Technology has a long tradition in doing technology-enhanced courses. Following the latest trends, as mentioned in the NMC Horizon Report [32], we reviewed the possibility to use a wearable technology, in our case the Google GlassTM, in courses to improve the interaction between the lecturer and the audience with a special focus on huge classes. The lack of interaction in traditional face-to-face lectures is a well-known problem with a long research history [4], [12]. New technologies in Audience Response Systems (ARS) offer new ways to improve the interaction between teacher and student by enabling to ask questions to the audience [5] to get instant feedback during a lecture. Currently many types of web-based ARSs are available on the market [15]. Our research focused on finding an ARS suitable for the visualization in the Google Glass display. Further we developed a prototype and described first practical experiences.

The great advantage of a Rich Internet Application (RIA) is the improved performance, since a great part of the processing can be done on the client-side rather than the server-side. For many web-based RIAs JavaScript (JS) is the most common programming language as it is popular as a script language for browsers. While server-side programming languages have the advantages of object oriented programming paradigm, JS bases on objects with a specific object literal notation. Using design architectures such as Model View Controller (MVC) in JS reduces the code complexity and allows semi-parallel application development. It causes an easier and much less time-consuming development on further extensions of RIAs. Web-based widgets are actually RIAs. In this paper a very simple design pattern for widget development is introduced that bases on MVC design architecture. The pattern has been applied during the development phase of widgets for the Personal Learning Environment (PLE) at Graz University of Technology (TU Graz) and is mostly appropriate for students and RIA developers who have beginner knowledge/experience in JS programming.
The influence of digital technologies as well as the World Wide Web on education rises dramatically. In former years Learning Management Systems (LMS) were introduced on educational institutes to address the needs both their institutions and their lecturers. Nowadays a shift from an institution-centered approach to a learner-centered one becomes necessary to allow individuality through the learning process and to think about learning strategies in general. In this paper a first approach of a Personal Learning Environment (PLE) is described. The technological concept is pointed out as well as a study about the graphical user-interface done at Graz University of Technology (TU Graz). It can be concluded that PLEs are the next generation environments, which help to improve the learning and teaching behavior
In the current ongoing work we propose the use of tracking and feedback mechanisms in order to improve our Personal Learning Environment (PLE), officially launched in October 2010. The approach can be seen as a necessary prerequisite similar to the darwinistic model of evolution. This means the implemented widgets will be improved (variation) and removed (selection) according to the observations. This paper will describe the backgrounds, methods and some details of the technical implementation.

The learning environment of the future must be more individualized and personalized -for years this is one of the international demands in the field of Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) and teaching. Since fall 2010 Graz University of Technology provides a Personal Learning Environment (PLE) based on mashup of widgets connecting various web applications. The publication aims to give a first demonstration of the way these PLE widgets can be converted to run on all common desktop operating systems to increase the range for individualization of learning activities. After a short introduction we present an overview about the possibilities of the PLE-converter, discuss the working prototype and conclude with an answer to the question of an online framework for the widgets as well as desktop variants for usual operating systems.
Teaching and Learning efforts at universities has been dominated by Learning Management Systems since years now. On the other side the so-called Web 2.0 technologies arise and assist teachers as well as learners through communication or collaborating with each other. Furthermore new web technologies like mashups or new devices like mobile phones allow us to work with the World Web Web from anywhere at anytime. In this publication a so-called Personal Learning Environment is introduced which was launched at Graz University of Technology for the first time in 2010. After a prototype phase a complete redesign were carried out to address more appropriate to users' needs. With the help of metaphors like spaces and apps the interface became quite easily and fulfilled the change towards learner-centered framework. It can be concluded that the learning environment of tomorrow has to integrate Web services as well as university wide services in an easy and understandable way to become a Personal Learning Environment.
Web 2.0 technologies opened up new perspectives in learning and teaching activities. Collaboration, communication and sharing between learners contribute to the self-regulated learning, a bottom-up approach. The market for smartphones and tablets are growing rapidly. They are being used more often in everyday life. This allows us to support self-regulated learning in a way that learning resources and applications are accessible any time and at any place. This publication focuses on the Personal Learning Environment (PLE) that was launched at Graz University of Technology in 2010. After a first prototype a complete redesign was carried out to fulfill a change towards learner-centered framework. Statistical data show a high increase of attractiveness of the whole system in general. As the next step a mobile version is integrated. A converter for browser-based learning apps within PLE to native smartphone apps leads to the Ubiquitous PLE, which is discussed in this paper in detail.
