Five centuries of Navarre historic narrative, from the end of the tenth century until the beginning of the sixteenth, enable us to appreciate how different authors had in mind the reality and interests of their own time when establishing their analysis and explanation about the origins of the Kingdom of Navarre in relation to the war against Islam. The earliest texts, written in the tenth century at the peak of the struggle with the Andalusians, propose a speech focused on the religious role of the defenders of Christian faith, with traits that are almost apocalyptic and hagiographic when depicting royal actions. With the al-Andalus frontier closed at the beginning of the twelfth century, the later texts (from the thirteenth century onwards), are organized according with the inner situation of the realm, focusing on the pretensions of the monarchy, the nobiliary interests or the pressures placed on Navarre by its neighboring kingdoms.
