This study aims to establish a typology of professionals based on the strategies used by social workers to resolve ethical dilemmas, and to explore the individual and organisational predictors in each typology. An online survey was carried out with 1069 Spanish social workers. Latent Class Analysis was used to identify different classes of participants. A latent class regression was performed to identify individual and organisational factors that predict latent class membership. The results allowed us to identify three classes: The group that follows an authority pattern, the group that follows an intuitive pattern, and the group that follows a resource-intensive pattern. The tests associated with the Wald statistic conclude that there are significant differences between the three typlogies in terms of work experience, training in ethical / deontological aspects and knowledge of the social work code of ethics.

Burnout and its relationship with job satisfaction have been addressed extensively. Research has focused mainly on diverse groups such as health care workers, teachers and (more recently) social workers. This study aims to examine the relationships between the dimensions of burnout and job satisfaction amongst social workers. A sample of 947 Spanish social workers was collected. We used a structural equation model using the partial least squares structural equation modelling approach. A series of hypotheses were formulated to analyse the relationship between burnout dimensions and job satisfaction. Emotional exhaustion is associated with high levels of deperson-alisation and low levels of personal accomplishment. Different personal and work-related characteristics are significantly associated with various dimensions of burnout and job satisfaction. This study confirms a statistically significant relationship between burnout dimensions and job satisfaction.

Burnout has been considered important to understanding the well-being of social workers and the quality of the services they render. Despite the ample international usage of the Maslach Burnout Inventory, its psychometric properties have come into question and alternative models of measuring the inventory have been suggested. The purpose of this study was to examine the psychometric properties and the applicability of a Spanish version of the Maslach Burnout Inventory-Human Services Survey (MBI-HSS) in an incidental sample of 947 social workers. Three alternative models of the MBI-HSS were tested for the purpose of identifying the most suitable model for measuring burnout in Spain. The confirmatory factor analysis supported the theory that the model of three correlated factors was superior to alternative models of one and two factors. The structure of three factors (emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and personal accomplishment) and 19 items showed the best adjustment and a suitable internal consistency of the dimensions of the MBI-HSS. These findings demonstrate that the MBI-HSS has validity and reliability acceptable for measuring burnout in social workers, providing valuable information to the managers of social services in order to reduce burnout among social workers. The limitations of the study and recommendations for future investigation are emphasized.
The objectives of this study were to estimate the prevalence of burnout syndrome in a sample of Spanish social workers and analyse the influence of a series of socio-demographic variables that may potentially be related to the appearance and development of one of the three dimensions of burnout. A total of 947 Spanish social workers participated in the study. Findings 33.2% and 22.1 of Spanish social workers experienced high levels of emotional exhaustion and depersonalisation, and 54.2% experienced low personal accomplishment at work. The hierarchical regression analysis showed that having been on sick leave in the preceding year was the most important predictor of emotional exhaustion. Moreover, full-time employment status was the most robust predictor of depersonalisation, and professional activity in specialised social services was the main predictor of personal accomplishment. The low percentages of total variance explained imply that although certain socio-demographic characteristics are significant predictors, their effects are very small. Applications Public and private organisations devoted to social services should be aware of the need to prevent this type of psychosocial risk to which social workers are exposed every day. This would help improve the health and quality of their lives as well as reduce the high costs which frequent worker turnover and sick leave entail, and would also enhance the effectiveness of the services provided.

The objective of this study is to determine the level of job satisfaction experienced by social workers and to establish whether there are significant differences between the various levels of job satisfaction and a series of personal features and job characteristics. The participants were 947 social workers (861 women and 86 men) belonging to 35 of the 36 Professional Associations existing in Spain. The measurement tool used is the Job Satisfaction Survey scale, designed by Spector [2002. Psicología Industrial y Organizacional: Investigación y Práctica [Industrial and organizational psychology: Research and practice]. México: Manual Moderno]. The results show that the social workers surveyed experience moderate levels of job satisfaction (M = 115.8; SD = 21.4). The intrinsic factor that seems to have the greatest positive influence on job satisfaction is the nature of the job, while the extrinsic factors of pay, fringe benefits, and operating conditions are the ones that contribute most to job dissatisfaction, and social workers have no control over any of them.
Coinciding with the 40th anniversary of the first sociological study on social work in our country, titled «Status of Social Services in Spain» by Jesús María Vázquez (1971), this article presents some of the main changes that have occurred in our profession in the last four decades.
