PHASE MORPHING Project

Goal: In the corresponding PDF there is a brief presentation of the whole patent application with publication number: WO/2018/020279.

Beyond that, here there is a focused presentation of a single case of this patent application:

TRISKELION BICYCLE MECHANISM

PROBLEM/MOTIVE: In Cycling, the Cyclist faces two obstacles:
-there is dead-center at top of pedal-stroke, where Cyclist must apply huge force resulting negligible torque and
-there is no even slight helping overlapping of pedaling power-periods(when Cyclist produces work), resulting that each single leg has to be so strong to move Bicycle alone.

SOLUTION/PROPOSAL: In this Mechanism the two crank-arms are non-rigidly connected together via variable-transmission-ratio gears, with predefined variable phase-difference, in order to impressively resolve both problems.
Installing it on a Bicycle, the minimum phase-difference is decreased to much less than 180-degrees of classic Bicycle, resulting in avoiding dead-points of pedal-stroke, while -and this is the most important- LARGE OVERLAPPING of actually power-periods is achieved.
Thanks to these improvements, torque that finally moves Bicycle is rendered much smoother, Cyclist has to make less effort for same result, while each involved member of his body is less strained than when riding classic Bicycle.
Although it is purely mechanical (net efficiency about 98%), cooperates ideally with assisting electric-motor, providing even higher exploitation of work that Cyclist produces, while, with any composition, performance of combination "Cyclist-and-Bicycle" is significantly increased.
When minimum phase-difference is 120 degrees, Cyclist feels as if he/she had THREE LEGS ("TRISKELION").

PAST/COMPETITION: No competition!
Older attempt (Rotor Cranks) had proposed solution where dead-centers are eliminated and Cyclists liked this feature, but there was only 5-degrees overlapping, instead of impressive 60-degrees of this Mechanism for mean/everyday Cyclist (TRISKELION), which overlapping increases up to 136-degrees (OCTASKELION: version for professional athletes).

ADVANTAGES: Connecting the two crank-arms via variable-transmission-ratio gears, two great advantages are achieved:
- ONE additional moving-part per pedal (giving minimum additional complexity/weight), and
- capability of applying optimized kinematic-pattern dedicated for specific Cyclist (www.your.bike).
Namely, in collaboration with a team of orthopedics, neurologists, physiotherapists and gymnasts can be worked out a kinematic-pattern optimization for each leg (hand in handcycle case), POINT-by-POINT, in terms of body ergonomics and minimization of stress and wear of MUSCLES, TENDONS and BONES, of HIPS, KNEES and ANKLES, taking, also, into account all critical personal data for specific Cyclist, including sex, age, use, health-condition, health-history (injuries etc) and even differentiations between right and left leg (hand).

PROTOTYPES/IP STATUS: Already 3 fully operating Prototypes with unlimited hours of Test Riding.
Final (5th Generation) Prototype (almost sale-ready) under final Design.
Already Patent Granted, other Patents Pending and others non-Published yet.

MARKET STRATEGY: Beginning by aiming at people with temporary/permanent health (especially leg) problems.
There is a special version for Cyclists with one only leg and there is the challenge to design Bicycle dedicated for such races, even for Paralympics (www.lion.bike).
Another Market will be the large one of stationary exercise-Bicycles.
After this great promotion, the idea will be propagated in all classic Bicycles for any use, starting with retrofitting kits for popular Bicycle models and then for any other model after ordering.
Final goal is to design Bicycles, with this Mechanism, from scratch.

FUTURE/VISION: This Mechanism is a REAL NEED for everyday life for two reasons:
- ecological ethics ask for electric AND human-powered-vehicles in centers of cities, and
- doctors suggest that everyone has to be exercised as much as possible, in a mild way, as walking/CYCLING.

A brief reference for the Intellectual Property for Engines being engineered by SYNISON Laboratory:
In 2005, 2006 and 2007 three successive Patent Applications took place, in scheduled progressive steps, for a very large Project, with several totally new Engines and other Mechanisms, and, in this way, the base for other future Patent Applications was laid.
The result was two PCT Applications (WO/2007/125373 & WO/2009/040588) with excellent Search Reports.
The final (at that moment) step (WO/2009/040588) had the disclosure of a promising new Piston Rotary Engine, named "THREEE CHIDOT", and there were Applications within national phase in specific countries.

Although that Engine from the point of view of mathematics and engineering was (and always is) a "Diamond", without an operating prototype it was not easy at all to achieve a commercial success.
On the contrary, the current PCT Application (WO/2018/020279) has (perhaps less revolutionary but) more promising (from the point of view of commercial success) implementations.
There is now a really brilliant "package" for "sale", that is the whole matter which is presented in this PCT Application, and namely:
a GENERIC MECHANISM, called PHASE MORPHING MECHANISM, which CAN PRODUCE ALL KNOWN Internal Combustion Engines currently in use, especially with new and rather surprising expandings, including:
- MODEL Engine: a new Deltic Engine (in Polygonal version, like the Napier one, or in the more sophisticated Toroidal version), with full symmetry and the minimum possible moving parts,
- HIPPO Engine: a new Opposed Pistons Engine, or of Radial type in general, with high overlapping of power periods, which can be a successful best seller in the form of smart Engines of Boxer type (there is already a "dry" prototype for a 2-cylinder and 4-stroke Boxer Engine with overlapping of power periods of 12 degrees, an almost mythic achievement),
- ASTRO Engine: a new Epi-Trochoidal Engine, like the Wankel one, but with an optimum, for torque generation, UNIQUE combustion chamber shape, an infinitely great compression ratio and the greater possible ratio of working volume to total volume

- TRISKELION: a new in-line Engine, which will be another Internal Combustion Engine OR the already well-known Bicycle Mechanism (Human Body is a perfect 2-"cylinder" and 2-stroke Engine, and, of course, not only), for which Bicycle Mechanism there are already full operating prototypes of third and fourth generation and a draft Business Plan

It is almost sure that all the above branches WILL BRING COMMERCIAL SUCCESS;
however, talking for Internal Combustion Engines probably will be a long time journey until this success,
while the Bicycle Mechanism will bring success and money even within the next months.
There are specific items for which there are already specific Patent Claims, there are specific items for which perhaps will be applied (or not) new Patent Applications in time, and, finally, there are other items which will be always in-house exclusive and secret intellectual and technological property.

Crankshaft-and-Pusher combination is the simplest and most efficient Mechanism for conversion of linear reciprocating motion into endless rotary, and vice versa, but Design inflexibility is its weak point. However, the Idea of Differentiation, in some way, of flow of Time, in transition of Energy from one element of Mechanism to next, resolves this problem. This Invention implements this Idea, referring to purely mechanical Mechanism, interposed between Work Production site and Machine Output, so that to smooth kinematic and dynamic features of Output or to improve geometric characteristics of Machine per se. Mechanism uses Odonto-Knodaces or Knodaces, so that, via innovative Phase Morphing Methodology, desired result is composed, point-by-point. Unlimited Applications include Bicycle Mechanism with reduced pedaling angle, minimizing fatigue, strain, muscles and bones damage, Symmetric Deltic Three-Cylinder Two-Stroke Engine, Two-Cylinder Four- Stroke Engine with Overlapped Power-Periods, Asymmetric Epi-Trochoidal Engine with unlimited compression ratio and high ratio of working to total volume.
