Operationalising Physical Literacy: Investigating a Practitioner Education Programme to Develop Practitioner Knowledge, Retention and Sharing to Colleagues and Young Learners

Goal: It is well recognised that practitioner education could impact on a learners Physical Literacy (PL) and subsequent Physical Activity (PA) throughout life. Boing is a workshop-based programme that aims to help practitioners develop children’s PL through active play. However, the impact on practitioners and subsequently learners (yes, it is all about the kids!) is unknown. Therefore, the aims of this study in partnership with Sport England are to explore current knowledge of, attitude towards, and confidence to deliver PL in relation to learner experience (yes, what do the kids think!).

Boing founder Danny Newcombe, Researcher Kirsten Wing and Operations lead Craig Hughes talk through Boing's conceptualisation, underpinning, current research and impact at the breakout sessions at the Association of Colleges National Sport Conferences 2021. Included are the research contribution slides for the breakout session.
An end of project technical report in partnership with the University of Gloucestershire and Sport England evaluating the Boing practitioner education programme. This report details an overview of the two year long evaluation, data collection methodology, results and key findings for future implementation. Key finings include: 1) more is needed to support the current workforce, 2) gender, race and location must be considered in both evaluations and industry as gaps are evident currently 3) listening to children is key as they have their own unique view of play and 4) there is an urgent need to find solutions for the divide between the 'real' world of play and the 'digital' world of play for the current generation of learners
