Project

Inclusive Cognitive Acceleration

Goal: Based on the experiences with Cognitive Acceleration according to Philip Adey and Michael Shayer (cf. Adey, 2008), in these projects we try to open the art of teaching with the help of the project method, the method of critical exploration (cf. Piaget) as well as the Lesson-Study.There is also a focus on students who are in need of inclusive pedagogy.

Magdalena Capiaghi, Stefan Meyer. Lecture at the SZH-Kongress (2019)
The case study investigated the effects of combining an action model that combines project-based mathematics instruction with cognitive acceleration (cf. Adey, 2008). The focus was on inclusive team teaching and the development of mathematics, socialization and autonomy of children with an immigrant background (second language learners) at the elementary level (1st/2nd grade). 21 students developed projects in small groups during two periods on measures they were interested in (length, clock, money) over a period of about four months. The analysis of the qualitative data from the guided interviews, the structured observation, from the research diary, from the video analysis, and from the reflection sessions show a positive development of the mathematical, social and autonomous competencies of the class as well as of the supported children. The cooperation in the project method and in the cognitive acceleration made the team-teaching more dynamic and deepened. Contrary to the prejudice that explorative learning based on active thinking and comprehension is too "time-consuming", the data showed the opposite: the children mastered the regular tasks very efficiently and well. The second language learners were able to acquire the technical vocabulary better than usual. Ziel der I
