How do Poles understand the concepts of feminism and feminist and how do they use these terms? Reconnaissance.
Goal: The concepts of feminism and feminist (men and women) belong to a group of terms which in the Polish language can be understood in various ways by users coming from different environments or social groups. These words can also be used with diverse intentions and for various purposes. The comparison of dictionary descriptions with the actual usage and functions of these concepts in the public discourse can provide interesting observations connected with word manipulation, using words for different purposes, values latent in the language and speakers’ intentions.
The text analysis, supported by the prepared working corpus on Korpusomat, helps to find preliminary answers to the question of how, with what intention and aim Poles use the terms feminism and feminist.

Project log
The project “How do Poles understand the concepts of feminism and feminist and how do they use these terms? Reconnaissance” is now at an initial stage. The author is during preparation of the minicorpus on the platform Korpusomat (www.korpusomat.nlp.ipipan.waw.pl). This collection of different texts will be the main tool for future linguistic analyses. The author wants to look for the answer to the following questions: What are Poles’ intentions and purposes when they use the concepts of feminism and feminist?. The National Corpus of Polish will constitute the second important tool (www.nkjp.pl)
This aforementioned microcorpus will include different types of texts: selected Catholic and right-wing web portals, selected blogs of people declaring feminist views, examples of texts coming from sources like “Codziennik Feministyczny”, samples of bishops’ letters to worshippers, all-Poland press, discussions on fora, comments found below texts etc.

Feminizm, feministka i feminista to jedne z wielu wyrazów w polszczyźnie, które przez Polki i Polaków z różnych środowisk mogą być rozmaicie rozumiane. Mogą być także używane z różnymi intencjami i w różnych celach. Porównywanie znaczeń słownikowych z tym, w jakiej funkcji wyrazy feminizm, feministka i feminista są używane przez Polki i Polaków w dyskursie publicznym przynosi ciekawe obserwacje dotyczące: manipulowania słowami, wykorzystywania słów do celów innych niż przekazanie informacji; wartości ukrytych w tych wyrazach; intencji nadawców.
Głównym celem projektu jest wstępne porównanie tego, jak wymienione pojęcia przedstawiają słowniki języka polskiego z tym, jak używają tych pojęć użytkownicy języka pochodzący z różnych środowisk.
Autorka analizuje znaczenia wyrazów feminizm, feministka i feminista, które zarejestrowano dotychczas w słownikach ogólnych języka polskiego oraz objaśnień tych pojęć znalezionych w literaturze przedmiotu dotyczącej feminizmu.
Kolejnym krokiem będzie obserwowanie użyć wyekscerpowanych z Narodowego Korpusu Języka Polskiego oraz wydobytych z różnych typów tekstów, z uwzględnieniem: wybranych portali katolickich i prawicowych, przykładowych blogów osób deklarujących się jako feminiści/feministki, internetowych wydań „Codziennika Feministycznego”, stenogramów sejmowych, listów Episkopatu, dyskusji na forach internetowych, wybranych artykułów prasowych, komentarzy pod tekstami w Internecie itd.
Analiza tekstów jest wsparta tworzeniem na bieżąco roboczego korpusu tekstów za pomocą Korpusomatu.
