Effects of the activity of the engineering species Ctenomys haigi (tuco-tuco patagónico) on soil properties, plant diversity and grassland productivity of NW Patagonia

Goal: The study of the activity of C. haigi is of great importance not only at the case study level but also for the evaluation of the impact at landscape and regional scales on two relevant aspects such as species diversity and pasture productivity. In addition, considering the study on a large scale also implies finding out what are the necessary vital requirements of the species under study. We believe that the precipitation gradient that occurs in the narrow NW Patagonian strip plays an important role in the distribution and abundance of the tuco-tuco. Precipitation is the engine of large-scale productivity, and the tuco-tuco is a herbivorous fossorial rodent, so its abundance will be greatly affected by the availability of vegetation. On the other hand, this work will contribute to theorizations and generalizations about the effects of engineering species.
