ENEC Cost Action: Effect of contact with nature during childhood on environmental attitudes, ecological behavior and environmental citizenship (behavior)
Goal: The recent movements of children and young adults to stop the further exploitation of this planet are well-suited examples for environmental citizenship of the future generation. The problems they address are known for years: societies face major environmental problems which will further increase in the future. It is widely agreed that in order to meet sustainability objectives, significant behavior change is required. While there is much knowledge about adult environmentalism, the research on children’s environmental attitudes and ecological behavior is far more limited. This project aims to determine the influencing factors on environmental attitudes, ecological behavior and environmental citizenship behavior during childhood and how they can persit and change through adulthood. One survey with retrospective elements with adults and a second survey with children of eight years of age in different school settings will be conducted to investigate these factors. This research plan embeds the topic in scientific literature, outlines the objectives of the project and will describe the planned study in detail.
