Classical Sociology in Early Boxing Literature

Goal: This project aims to highlight the relevance of the juncture between boxing literature and classical sociology.

The pugilist figure was a prime source of fascination for the nascent 20th century mass culture. Writers and artists, like Jack London, Francisco Ayala o Sergei Eisenstein, turn their attention to the world of boxing as a way to depict and express not only perennial dramas on the human condition, but also pushing anxieties brought by the industrial capitalist society and its civilizational transformations.

Collaborations and suggestions are welcome.

Thus, the ring is capable of becoming and being analyzed as a space of political practice, antagonism and debate that, in its formal statement of carnal and symbolic violence, condenses a particularly effective synthesis of corporalities and discourses.
