COST Action CA18225 - WaterTOP - Taste and Odor in early diagnosis of source and drinking Water Problems

Goal: WaterTOP is a COST Action, i.e. a pan-European network on “Taste and Odor in early diagnosis of source and drinking Water Problems”. WaterTOP is funded by COST (2019-2023).

Website: http://www.watertopnet.eu/

Brief description of waterTOP:
Unpleasant taste and odor (T&O) of water can indicate quality problems or possible risks for human health and can make water unacceptable by consumers. A plethora of water T&O of natural or anthropogenic origin can enter water at the source, during water treatment or in distribution networks. Resolution of water T&O problems requires integration of a) sensory analysis to describe the problem, b) chemical analysis to determine the identity and concentration of T&O c) assessment of associated risks and d) suitable water treatment to control T&O. Expertise in Europe across those dimensions are yet scattered and fragmented. The main aim of waterTOP is to increase capabilities and capacities in Europe for solving water T&O, by creating the first European network of multi-disciplinary experts, end-users and stakeholders in the field. An “innovation by integration” approach is adopted, incorporating novel cross-sector knowledge transfer from the food sector, new international collaborations, vertical “source to tap” risk assessment strategies and horizontal integration with overlapping sectors, i.e. aquaculture, manufacturers of materials in contact with water, sensors and analytical technologies. WaterTOP will have strong impact in improving protection of public health and water resources, quality of life, use of tap water, consumer’s awareness and involvement in water quality issues and professional development of young researchers in the field. It will largely contribute to the implementation of the new (recast) EU Drinking Water Directive and to the development of European leadership in the science and technology of water quality.

Aesthetic aspects of drinking water, such as Taste and Odor (T&O), have significant effects on consumer perceptions and acceptability. Solving unpleasant water T&O episodes in water supplies is challenging, since it requires expertise and know-how in diagnosis, evaluation of impacts and implementation of control measures. We present gaps, challenges and perspectives to advance water T&O science and technology, by identifying key areas in sensory and chemical analysis, risk assessment and water treatment, as articulated by WaterTOP (COST Action CA18225), an interdisciplinary European and international network of researchers, experts, and stakeholders.

WaterTOP has launched a Special Issue ‘Water taste and odour (T&O): challenges, gaps and solutions’ in Chemical Engineering Journal Advances.  CEJA is a new open-access journal, partner title to the Chemical Engineering Journal, which is expected to have a strong impact.
An important detail is that the APC costs will be fully waived for all submissions received before Dec 31, 2020.

Our competition for the WaterTOP Logo design has been successfully completed ! The Management Committee voted for the best Logo design among the 30 submissions, in two voting rounds. Competition was very strong and all of the submitted Logos received votes. We would like to warmly thank all those who submitted their ideas!
And finally, to congratulate Ana Margarida Gorito Gonçalves, Environmental Engineer, PhD student at the Faculty of Engineering of University of Porto (FEUP). Ana’s PhD studies are focused on the treatment of aquaculture effluents and result form a collaboration between 2 research institutions of University of Porto, specifically LSRE-LCM (FEUP) and CIIMAR. One of her obvious personal interests is graphics works for science dissemination.
Congratulations Ana !!!
Looking forward to meeting Ana soon in our next MC meeting, where Ana will receive the award for the Logo !
