Animal Wellness: understanding the needs of underserved and low-income families in southern California.

Goal: To identify and understand the veterinary wellness needs of underserved and low income pet families in San Diego county. Work resulting in recommendations to San Diego Humane Society that will positively impact community animal health and increase access to services.

To identify and understand the veterinary wellness needs of underserved and low income pet families in San Diego county. Work resulting in recommendations to San Diego Humane Society that will positively impact community animal health and increase access to services.
 
Chosen design for research portion was a transformative concurrent mixed method study due to the mission of the animal shelter, the project's goal and community participation.
 
Data was collected from participants residing in 138 of the 141 different zip codes within San Diego county. Three focus groups in low income communities were conducted, along with seven in-depth public interviews from underserved populations. As well as, focus group with local police and 25 internal interviews. A total of 2,538 participants completed the online survey.
