With the advancement of digital technologies, new approaches to a traditional concept have become feasible. The Plant Phylogeny Poster project is a collaborative initiative providing clear and concise overviews of orders, families and genera of various groups of plants. The global project now involves around 150 botanists from all around the world with currently 400 posters in 35 languages (as of March 2022). All posters are freely available online and regularly updated, providing an extensive portfolio of versatile new teaching resources for educators. "However, there are a few changes in relationships and new families/orders that have been made since APG IV. The latter are listed immediately below, while in the summary they are indicated by asterisks. Some of these changes are new families that reflect recent collections, e.g. the remarkable Tiganophytaceae, from the Namib area and in Brassicales, while others, like Oncothecales, a very small order that may well be sister to all other core asterids/gentianids, are the results of changed ideas of relationships that are being suggested by comprehensive analyses using nuclear genomes. This latter kind of change in particular is being made only when support for the changed relationships is strong, otherwise confusion will result. However, now that PAFTOL is off the ground, with an immediate goal of including all genera of flowering plants (W. J. Baker et al. 2021a, b: see also Seed Plant Tree of Life), who knows what the future holds? Note that many relationships along the spine of the Pentapetalae well up into the asterids are subject to change! All changes are being carefully justified.

A recent plastid phylogenomic analysis (PPA II) is largely confirming previous results of plastid DNA phylogenetic reconstructions in angiosperm relationships. One statement there: "Thus, we suggest separating Dasypogonales from Arecales, Sabiales from Proteales, Huales from Oxalidales, and Oncothecales from Icacinales, ...." Historically, wallcharts and posters created by botanical illustrators, often highly skilled artists, have played an important role in teaching botany at the university level. Large-scale panels and posters can visualize complex interrelationships and entire stories in a clear and appealing overview in graphs, tables, and diagrams. Carrying this concept of educational tools into the electronic era, the Plant Phylogeny Poster project uses this approach for displaying evolutionary relationships in systematic botany. The Angiosperm Phylogeny Poster (APP) displays, as phylogenetically arranged clades, the orders and families of flowering plants (with orders hyperlinked to APweb, Stevens, 2001-onwards), the Tracheophyte Phylogeny Poster (TPP) families and genera of ferns and gymnosperms, and the Bryophyte Phylogeny Poster (BPP) orders and families of liverworts, mosses, and hornworts. The portfolio currently also includes about 30 posters on individual orders and families of angiosperms. Each group within these evolutionary trees is matched with essentially relevant morphological features, biogeographic occurrences, and other information in compactly condensed text blocks. All posters are freely available online, some in more than 30 languages, coauthored by a team of more than 130 botanists. The posters are regularly updated, current literature is cited. The project is expanding steadily and rapidly.

Two recent nDNA/transcriptome analyses of asterids by Stull et al.* and Zhang et al.** are pointing to a possible position of Oncothecaceae as sister to all other core asterids and an immediate sister relationship between Ericales and Cornales (then best referred to as: EC clade) – and that the families currently assigned to Icacinales and Aquifoliales are not monophyletic. Further studies will be needed to confirm these hypotheses. In a further nuclear/transciptome study by Yang et al.***, an attempt was made to elucidate the general "deep" backbone of the angiosperm tree, resulting in the proposed topology: monocots, magnoliids, Chloranthales, Ceratophyllales, eudicots. However, the conflicting results in this study lead those same authors to state that a "fully bifurcating tree may be an inadequate representation of the early radiation of angiosperms".
Thus, we have decided to retain the present topology of the "Angiosperm Phylogeny Poster" which greatly follows PPA (cpDNA) and wait for further developments.

Seit Jahrhunderten bemühen sich Botaniker, „Ordnung ins System“ zu bringen – für die Blütenpflanzen ist man diesem Ziel nun sehr nah. Ein Konsortium international führender Pflanzensystematiker hat die Ergebnisse der molekularen Phylogenie der vergangenen drei Jahrzehnte zusammengefasst und unter Berücksichtigung morphologisch-anatomischer und chemotaxonomischer Gesichtpunkte daraus die Verwandtschaftsbeziehungen der Blütenpflanzen reinterpretiert. Es resultiert ein evolutionär begründeter Stammbaum, der auf der Ebene der Hauptgruppen (Ordnungen und Familien) nun ein hohes Maß an Stabilität aufweist.

Two recent phylogenomic studies based on nuclear genome data1,2 suggest slightly different topologies in some parts of the tree, especially immediately basal to rosids and asterids. These vary with respect to the strictly plastome-based PPA tree. We are waiting for further studies before making changes to the topology of the Angiosperm Phylogeny Poster (APP).

The Angiosperm Phylogeny Poster – Flowering Plant Systematics is an educational poster presenting an overview of the evolutionary relationships among flowering plants, based on APG IV/APweb and in this update chiefly following the topology suggested by plastid phylogenomic relationships (see: Li HT et al. 2019. Origin of angiosperms and puzzle of the Jurassic gap. Nature Plants 5: 461–470; Fig. 2 therein). The phylogenetic tree depicts the 64 orders and the majority of the 416 families, listing the main apo- and plesiomorphies as well as diagnostic and nondiagnostic anatomical, morphological, and phytochemical features for orders and higher ranks within the tree along with the number of families, genera, and species for each order. The intuitive color-coding facilitates memorization and teaching. The poster is now available in 29 languages (all downloadable from ResearchGate).

We are in the process of updating all posters in the APP series to chiefly comply with the recently published plastid phylogenomic angiosperm (PPA) tree: Li HT et al. (2019) Origin of angiosperms and the puzzle of the Jurassic gap, Nature Plants 5: 461–470, Fig. 2 therein. Major changes include:
1) Petrosaviales sister to Asparagales
2) Dilleniales sister to superrosids
3) Asterales + Escalloniales clade
4) Santalales (rather than Berberidopsidales) sister to remaining superasterids
5) COM clade: Oxalidales (Celastrales + Malpighiales)
6) resolution of the polytomy in Lamiids

Nature Plants 2019). The phylogenetic tree depicts the 64 orders and the majority of the 416 families, listing the main apomorphies and plesiomorphies as well as diagnostic and nondiagnostic anatomical, morphological, and phytochemical features for orders and higher levels within the tree along with the number of families, genera, and species for each order. The intuitive color-coding facilitates memorization and teaching. Translations of the poster by internationally renowned botanists are now available in 29 languages. Hyperlinks to APweb (Peter F. Stevens, Missouri Botanical Garden) are provided for the orders and higher ranks. This is one in a series of three educational posters on the phylogeny of land plants: Poster 1: "Angiosperms", Poster 2: "Tracheophytes: Lycophytes, Ferns, Gymnosperms", Poster 3: "Bryophytes: Liverworts, Mosses, Hornworts".

In a recent major plastome multi-gene analysis of monocots, Givnish et al. (AJB, 2018) propose "to recognize Dasypogonales as its own order rather than as part of an extraordinarily anomalous, expanded order of "palms", and that the next update of the APG schema should be emended accordingly". Further, they propose to add Thismiaceae to Dioscoreales.

Resolution of deep eudicot phylogeny and their temporal diversification using nuclear genes from transcriptomic and genomic datasets

The tree based on 161 genes in Fig. 3 presents strong support for i) Dilleniales as sister to Caryophyllales, ii) Santalales basal to, consecutively, Vitales and Saxifragales (followed by the classical Rosids), while iii) the position of Berberidopsidales there is weakly supported.
The according changes will be implemented in the poster if these relationships prove to hold.
