Project

A revision of Mormoops magna Silva 1974

Goal: We are currently revising the taxonomic systematics of this Cuban extinct bat, Mormoops magna Silva 1974 (Chiroptera: Mormoopidae). By using morphology, morphometrics, and proteomics we are testing whether M. magna represents a valid taxon, or if it is simply an extreme in the variation of M. megalophylla.

Geometric morphology analysis is now complete. We are awaiting for proteomics analysis to complete and submit this research. The results are interesting.

We have compiled measurements and compared most Mormoops megalophylla fossils from Florida. Fossils from Cuba have already been sent to Dr. Mike Buckley's Proteomics lab, at the University of Manchester. We await results soon!

The morphological and morphometrical aspects are now completed. We are currently waiting to complete the proteomic analysis, that will help
confirm or not, wether M. magna is valid. This analysis will completed by Mike Buckley, from the University of Manchester and his students. Many thanks are due to Osvaldo Jimenez, Adrian Tejedor, and Gilberto Silva for the continous support.
