2-BRAINS - 2-Brain Regulatory Attunement: Impact of Neonatal Stress

Goal: Goal: Which neurological mechanisms allow parents and infants to synchronize together? How early adverse conditions - such as preterm birth - might affect the neural synchrony between parents and infants?

Thanks to recent advances in brain science, this study applies the EEG hyperscanning technique in a naturalistic parent-infant interaction setting to investigate how the brain of parents and infants couple together and resonate second-by-second. Moreover, by enrolling a group of preterm infants and their mothers, this study will highlight the presence of potential alterations in brain-to-brain synchrony in the presence of early adverse conditions.

The study is supported by the Italian Ministry of Health and by Fondazione Banca del Monte di Lombardia. This is a collaboration between the IRCCS Mondino Foundation and the Fondazione IRCCS Policlinico San Matteo, Pavia.
