The aim of this study was to quantify waning rates from seroprevalence data collected in a study of population with a high vaccination coverage and fixed vaccination schedule. Data were collected during the national Immunologic Survey in the Slovak Republic in 2018. The average waning rate after the first dose (age 1.5 - 10 years) is 9.7% per year...

We present an epidemiological model, which extend the classical SEIR model by accounting for the presence of asymptomatic individuals and the effect of isolation of infected individuals based on testing. Moreover, we introduce two types of home quarantine, namely gradual and abrupt one. We compute the equilibria of the new model and derive its repr...

We present two epidemiological models, which extend the classical SEIR model by accounting for the effect of indiscriminate quarantining, isolation of infected individuals based on testing and the presence of asymptomatic individuals. Given a constraint that limits the maximal number of simultaneous active cases, we demonstrate that the isolation r...

We propose a new epidemiological model, based on the classical SIR model, taking additionally into account a switching prevention strategy. The model has two distinct thresholds that determine the beginning and the end of an intervention and two different transmission rates. We study the global dynamics of the proposed two-dimensional model.

By proving the existence of non-monotone and non-oscillating wavefronts for the Nicholson's blowflies diffusive equation (the NDE), we answer an open question from [16]. Surprisingly, wavefronts of such a kind can be observed even for arbitrarily small delays. Similarly to the pushed fronts, obtained waves are not linearly determined. In contrast,...

By proving the existence of non-monotone and non-oscillating wavefronts for the Nicholson's blowflies diffusive equation (the NDE), we answer an open question raised in [16]. Surprisingly, these wavefronts can be observed only for sufficiently small delays. Similarly to the pushed fronts, obtained waves are not linearly determined. In contrast, a b...

The recent measles outbreaks in US and Germany emphasize the importance of sustaining and increasing vaccination rates. In Slovakia, despite mandatory vaccination scheme, decrease in the vaccination rates against measles has been observed in recent years. Different kinds of intervention at the state level, like a law making vaccination a requiremen...

Objective: In Slovakia, thanks to a highly effective vaccination programme, no domestic cases of measles have been reported since 1999. However, there are several outbreaks of measles currently hitting some countries in Europe. Difficulties in reaching the goal of measles elimination make it necessary to monitor the status of the population suscep...

Slovakia is one of the few European countries where mandatory vaccination is enacted by law. However, recent frequent mass media discussions of the adverse effects of vaccination have gradually decreased compliance of parents: a shift from mandatory scheme to voluntary one has become an issue. In this paper, we estimate the epidemiological situatio...

The WHO report on the global and regional burden of disease and risk factors in 2001 lists meningitis among the ten leading causes of disease-adjusted life years loss. A vaccine is available for some, but not all of the strains of meningococcal meningitis. Although the WHO provides guidelines on recognizing an epidemic, there is some discussion wit...

The valuation of forest stands is traditionally based on a profit calculus involving revenue from wood sales and associated costs. Currently, the role of carbon management in forests is actively discussed. In a stochastic setting we extend the analysis of the optimal rotation period by considering uncertain revenue streams from carbon trading. We d...

Mitigation of and adaptation to climate change belong to the most pressing global challenges for the 21 st century. Major mitigation options include improved energy efficiency, shifting towards less carbon-intensive fossil fuels, increased use of energy sources with near-zero emissions, such as renewables and nuclear, CO 2 capture and permanent sto...

Investments in bioenergy combined with CO 2 capture and storage are analysed in a pulp and paper mill context within a real options framework. Uncertainty is considered in the economic modelling through the use of stochastically correlated price processes of one input and two output prices. The paper also discusses R&D challenges that would need to...

Today there is common agreement that human actions are resulting in increasingly large-scale — even global — risks. Yet there seems to be a universal inability to stop these human, environmental and economic effects. In this chapter we consider the management of surprise in the framework of a wide spectrum of hazard levels. For instance, a reductio...
