Wear-resistant tools are used in many areas of the industry. The cost of repairing or replacing of the tools due to wear is very significant. Machining and obtaining high-wear resistance tool steels is very expensive. The aim of the project is the experimental development of a PVD coating layer system which is also beneficial in terms of wear resistance and corrosion resistance. We intend to coat different coating layers to the surface of selected cold and hot forming tool steels and to test the wear and corrosion resistance of these samples. Prior to the project, a series of experiments have already been carried out for which the specimens were prepared in India at the partner institution. Using the results, we intend to design and create new coating layers while better understanding the coating technology. The coating technology can also be used for PVD coating with equipment designed and built by Dr Umesh Mhatre, an Indian project partner, and the Swiss PerformCoat coating equipment. The surface roughness of the workpieces strongly influences the wear resistance. Certain surface treatment technologies modify the surface roughness, so the preparation method must be properly defined. A new direction is the application of coating layers to the surface of tool steels after water or cryogenic hardening. Coating layers should be designed to have both a softer and a harder layer. The working surface layer must be hard, wear resistante and corrosion resistante, while a softer energy-absorbing layer must be provided underneath. The high wear resistance of the complex coating is provided by layers of appropriate thickness and mechanical properties.
