Introduction
Healthcare Design and Emotional Design strongly linked together. Finding a way to have a better Design in Healthcare centers needs knowing the needs and emotion of users clearly. This is my interesting research field.

It is conceivable that capitalism and the new market economy as it currently operates is unsustainable despite the bullish opinions of businessmen and entrepreneurs. There are many obvious concerns surrounding an economy without money the most basic of which is the accounting of productivity. However, if we are seriously engaged in this thought exp...
Emotional Design and Total Quality: a way to make a health care environment evolve positively towards a cost reduction and continuous performance improvements—a general model—the relevance of measures—what to measure and how to do it—interpretation of the collected data through the proper representation (the seven tools of Ishikawa).
Possible actions in health care environment through Emotional Design: changes in physical elements (furniture, interior, etc.), in functional aspects, in the procedures and in the staff behaviour—useful action in the various steps of the healing path—examples of experiences and of projects.
The chapter explores the opportunities provided by listening musing and watching movies to influence the emotional status of the patients. The technical characteristic of music associated to different emotions is indicated. Experiments in emotion arousal measures of persons looking at movies are referred. Some possible projects are suggested.
Relationships between emotions and the reactions of patients to the disease and to therapies—organization of a healing path in terms of subsequent steps—analysis of emotional needs in each step—the role of Emotional Design—recent studies in Emotional Architecture.
The chapter highlights the opportunity to institutionalize Emotional Design studies for health care environments. The studies on the subject are wide and varied, and the skills present at the Design Department of the Politecnico di Milano are mentioned. An international study is hoped to produce guidelines to be applied to the architecture and desi...
This chapter presents both real experiences of interventions in health care environments and a rich collection of projects. All the experiences and projects are joined with a description of the goals and, when possible, of the obtained results.
From Industrial Design to Emotional Design—the neurophysiological basis of perception and emotions as triggers for Emotional Design—a classification of emotions and a list of perceptual principles according to neurosciences—the power of metaphors to raise emotions in communication. Some examples.
The concept and the practices of Kansei Engineering as a way to “measure” emotions—Flow Kansei Engineering to evaluate the changes of the emotional status over the time—Practical experiences and results.
Looks at the use of prototyping in design research across a range of disciplines. Uses case studies to demonstrate theoretical and methodological transferability among disciplines not typically thought to be related to one another. This is an important contribution to the emerging field of integrative design.
Significant increase in both the scale through which designers collaborate and in the complexity of the problem-solution space they confront makes design thinking a lengthier and more fragmented process than it used to be, challenging commonly accepted notions of timeframes associated with shaping a well-integrated solution. Part of the challenge i...
This essays presents the research results in the field of Emotional Design, carried on during the educational
experience provided by a first level postgraduate Master and students coming from 10 different nationalities. The
experience proposes an original model of the capability of communicating meanings through the design of
perceptual elements.

The economic success of a movie depends on the satisfaction of audience and on how much they are emotionally engaged while watching it. Our research is related to the identification of such kind of emotions felt by movie watchers during the movie screening. We endorse the model of 7 Primary-process emotions from Affective Neuroscience (SEEKING, PLA...
This paper presents a set of experiences conducted in teaching Emotional Design, in which students were involved both in learning / applying theoretical aspects and in defining / evaluating procedural methods for stimulating creativity and finding new solutions. Our approach involves two parallel guidelines: the former consists of a set of individu...
A very short presentation about Kansei Engineering and Emotions will be done (10 minutes): the content will be summarised into two posters that the participants will see in any moment, hanging on the walls.
The presentation will include a specific goal: to design a light suitable for a specific waiting area (according to personal needs and feeling...
The general tendency of design is that being based on human and the aim of Kansei engineering is to follow the structure of emotions based on human behaviors. As we know, Kansei appears in individual emotions and is able to create different feelings in human mind (Nagamachi, 2010) where Flow is a teleonomy of the self (Csikzentmihaly, 1992). Howeve...
In general, for health care centers it is vital to know the kind and the intensity of
emotions felt by its patients and how to influence their quality of life and their response to
therapies. In particular, waiting areas in which patients spend a lot of time without significant
interactions is an important focus of this study. Recent studies sugges...
To influence on emotion of the people in waiting rooms, knowing the amount and kind of user’s emotion is vital. According seven-category of emotion. The goals are to increase and provoke positive emotions and to decrease negative emotions by design. Besides feeling illness and its consequences, measuring emotion helps us to understand the amount of...
A special Exposition of Artworks was organized in the main Reception Hall of Oncological Center Istituto dei Tumori (Milan - Italy), introducing paintings of a Japanese Painter, who was also a patient of the Hospital. He drafted the artworks during his admission and he completed them at home, when recovered. The paintings tell the story of the succ...
Kansei Engineering is not well-known in Iran. This study presents a pioneer work in Iran using Kansei Engineering to design a desk for art students and addresses the difficulties faced during this project. Kansei Engineering type I was used because it was compatible with available resources and its required training was straight forward considering...
