Abstract
The problem of genetically modified foods continues to be relevant in food safety field. There is a great number of "pros" and "cons" among scientists. The disputes continue as there is no definite decision on the GM foods safety in the world. The article presents a generalized scheme of the research and methods for determining genetically modified foods safety.
In the course of the research, the authors proposed an additional method to determine the GM foods safety, allowing to expand the range of research methods aimed at studying the long-term effects of GM foods. The new method is based on the application of bioassay and use of Paramecium caudatum infusoria as the samples of bioassays.
There were studied the samples of soy with a transformation event GTS 40-3 and GTS 40-3-2 (Venus variety), maize of MON 00603 (NK 603) line and not genetically modified control samples.
As a result, the soy of Venus variety (GTS 40-3-2) showed current toxicity effect on the protozoa, which perished within the repeated experiments on 14-15th day after the start of feeding.
The application of the method in the practice of GM foods safety assessment will allow to give a preliminary assessment of the long-term effects in a short time and to conduct a more thorough and comprehensive study if it is necessary.
The authors of the article do not support the use of GM foods and do not take the side of its negative effects. A consumer of such products should be considered to be the key figure, as well as to have the right to choose a fine and safe product.
