This study aimed to develop a Japanese version of the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT) using Psychology Experiment Building Language based on the English version. Additionally, we tested the equivalence of these versions using a biological equivalence test. We randomly assigned 63 undergraduate and graduate students from several Japanese universities to ou...
Chapter
The purpose of this chapter is to discuss how cross-cultural research on trust and trustworthiness can be applied to the workplace of Japan that is being increasingly multicultural. We started with a question about how cultures have been generalted and maintained and learned that the origin of collectivism, a most characteristic nature of the Japan...

Manufacturers of packaged consumer goods strive to develop a new product with a special feature that could provide additional value to consumers. However, it is less clear whether such an effort is still rewarding in terms of margin if manufacturers are losing power to retailers as some have argued. To investigate this issue, we conduct an economic...

Allais and Nich`ele (2007) proposed a Markov-switching almost ideal demand system (MS-AIDS) model by extending the idea of Hamilton (1989). In this paper, we propose a Bayesian estimation for MS-AIDS model and illustrate applicability of our proposed method. We then run two sets of simulation studies to confirm the validity of the proposed method....

The MSE-minimizing local variable bandwidth for the univariate local linear estimator (the LL) is well-known. This bandwidth does not stabilize variance over the domain. Moreover, in regions where a regression function has zero curvature, the LL estimator is discontinuous. In this paper, we propose a variance-stabilizing (VS) local variable diagona...

We derive asymptotic properties of an estimator for supply and demand models extended with additional moments relating consumer demographics to the characteristics of purchased products. We clarify the structure of a practical sampling scheme in which the extended estimator is consistent, asymptotically normal, and more efficient than the original...

During this study period, there have been serious food safety concerns regarding Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (henceforth BSE) and bird flu in Japan. Previous studies such as Peterson and Chen (2005) and Ishida et al. (2010) assumed that structural change points in demands were already known and they specified transition functions at the change...

This study examines correlation between unemployment rates and juvenile homicide rates for 16-17 and 18-19 age groups during 1974-2008 in Japan, using cointegration regression and error correction models. Since the publication of Yuma. Kanazawa, and Yuma (2010), two more yearly data sets become available and we include them in this study. For 16-17...

Research on the effects of personality on work behaviors has adopted either the motivational meditation perspective or the person-situation interaction perspective. This study attempted to integrate both of the perspectives in a single causal model. Specifically, using data collected from systems engineers and car salespeople in Japan, we investiga...

In this article, we study the effectiveness of three training school programs, namely, long-term, general short-term, and special short-term programs, compared with probation on recidivism of Japanese juvenile delinquents with differing criminal experiences. We employ the logit/individual lognormal split-population model to examine the relationship...

This paper provides a survey on studies that analyze the macroeconomic effects of intellectual property rights (IPR). The first part of this paper introduces different patent policy instruments and reviews their effects on R&D and economic growth. This part also discusses the distortionary effects and distributional consequences of IPR protection a...

In linear regression under heteroscedastic variances, the Aitken estimator is employed to counter heteroscedasticity. Employing the same principle, we propose the Nadaraya-Watson regression estimator with variable variance-stabilizing bandwidth (VS bandwidth) that minimizes asymptotic MISE (AMISE) while maintaining asymptotic homoscedasticity. W e...

The majority of research on intrinsic motivation has examined the impact of environmental factors that aroused people's needs for competence and self-determination and their influence on behavior. Relatively less attention, however, has been paid to the identification of psy-chological individual differences in intrinsic motivation. The present stu...

The continuously increasing rate of women's labour force participation has rendered the traditional male provider female homemaker construction of gender roles obsolete or anachronistic. Due to the change in the sex role ideology, balancing or juggling work and family roles has become a particularly important issue for working men and women. As a r...

The maintenance and repair cost of durable goods has traditionally been hidden from consumers and yet has been non-negligible part of Life Cycle Cost(LCC) computation.Predicting the maintenance and repair cost is difficult because many of these durable goods do not have constant failure rates. For some dirable products,it is often the case that we h...

The problem of false negatives, people who really have attitudes but refrain from expressing them, could seriously bias the analysis, but has largely been neglected. Using a survey data including a number of “don’t know” responses, this paper examined whether “don’t know” respondents had underlying attitudes. We treated these nonresponses as nonign...

Rapidly progressive glomerulonephritis (RPGN) is a life-theatening nephritis with a rapid decline in renal function. In this paper, we examine the three alternative treatments relative to the most commonly-used oral steroid for the two prevalent forms of RPGN, called PautiCrGN and MPA, in Japan. The response “Exitus” is potentially non-ignorably mi...

Hellinger distance, Kullback-Leibler loss, and variance-stabilizing integrated square error are shown to be asymptotically equivalent up to a constant. Simulation confirmed the result. Implications of the result for kernel and histogram density estimation and the connection of the result with goodness of fit tests are discussed.
Article
The optimal window width, which asymptotically minimizes mean Hellinger distance between the kernel estimator and density, is known to be equivalent to the one that maximizes expected Kullback—Leibler loss for compactly supported densities. Implications of the result are discussed.

The optimal histogram cell width, which asymptotically minimizes the mean Hellinger distance between the histogram and density, is shown to be equivalent to the one that maximizes Akaike's information criterion for compactly supported densities.

Suppose we wish to construct a variable k-cell histogram based on an independent identically distributed sample of size n -1 from an unknown density f on the interval of finite length. A variable cell histogram requires cutpoints and heights of all of its cells to be specified. We propose the following procedure: (i) choose from the order statistic...
Article
A simple procedure for specifying a histogram with variable cell sizes is proposed. The procedure chooses a set of cutpoints that maximizes a criterion function based on the sample spacings:Under some conditions, this estimated set of cutpoints is shown to converge in probability to the theoretical set of cutpoints for the histogram estimate that m...

In this paper, we propose a Bayesian simultaneous demand and supply model for aggregate data in a differentiated product market. The proposed method treats price endogeneity and consumer heterogeneity as well as requires only aggregate data. In the Bayesian estimation, we use an MCMC algorithm including the data augmentation, Gibbs sampler and Metr...

The latent growth model has been widely used to analyze longitudinal data in social science research. The model examines the development of subjects on one or more outcome variables over time and captures subject differences in development by using the latent variables (random effects). Missing values in the analysis of longitudinal study often occ...
