Introduction
My interests are in health geographies, political geography and regional development as well as their interrelatedness. My works are therefore multidisciplinary & extend beyond the discipline of geography to include spatial demography, public health, development studies and allied disciplines.
The interrelatedness in my specializations are captured in two of my publications - The Routledge Handbook of African Demography (T&F) and Health and Medical Geography in Africa (Springer Nature).

This paper investigates the relationships between the population’s levels of social well-being and places of residence, and how these underlie the incidence of malaria in a traditional African city. Using a stratified sampling technique with population density as the parameter, a total of 15 localities from the 5 metropolitan LGAs in Ibadan typifyi...
p class="abstract"> Background: The quality of the living environment affects the population’s exposure and susceptibility to diseases, yet most available indices for the measurement of residential environmental quality are based on the population’s perception of their environment rather than on objectively verifiable indicators. This paper develop...
The global rate of urbanization outstrips the provision of social services, particularly healthcare. This situation, and the hypothesis that healthcare services are more accessible to people of higher socioeconomic groups who live in the best parts of a city than to the relatively poor who live in the other parts of the city, inform this study. The...
The South African government instituted a countermeasure against COVID-19 in March 2020, which had a significant impact on many individuals, particularly the youth. However, there is a limited understanding of how household characteristics influenced adolescents’ behavioral changes and their adoption of preventive measures during the pandemic. This...
Background
Contraception is an important public health initiative for addressing maternal health outcomes associated with unplanned pregnancies, unsafe abortions and maternal deaths. Although contraceptive use has been on the rise globally, the observed increases in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) are sub-optimal and vary among countries. In Zambia, drive...
Nigeria is ranked number two in the world with the highest prevalence of open defecation (OD) despite the adoption of community-led total sanitation (CLTS) since 2007. Using some CLTS-triggered communities in Ebonyi State, this study investigated the awareness of CLTS, OD status, and its drivers as well as social workers' involvement in environment...
The COVID-19 pandemic appears to be impeding the progress of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal and the African Union’s Agenda 2063 in achieving optimal health and well-being for individuals, particularly older adults. Numerous older adults have succumbed to the virus, exacerbating existing global health challenges. In response, scien...
The willingness to get vaccinated in South Africa is among the highest in the world, measuring at 76%. This study investigated the impact of individual risk beliefs, self-reported health status, and familiarity with someone with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) on the willingness to get vaccinated in South Africa. Data were obtained from the Wav...
This introductory chapter illuminates the connection between health and development in Africa and argues for enhanced recognition of the centrality of geography to health. It also provides a general overview of the subdiscipline of health and medical geography and presents a general outline of the book.
Climate change is a leading public health concern of the twenty-first century and has implications for population health globally. In this chapter, we present a general overview of what climate change is and how its direct and indirect effects are associated with disease prevalence and population health outcomes. In discussing these associations, e...
This chapter discusses the prevailing paradigms in the practice of health and medical geography in Africa. It focuses on the philosophical perspectives of empiricism, positivism, structuralism and humanism that were found to be more prevalent in the literature. It further describes the nature of questions in the works of health and medical geograph...
The impacts of gender relations (GR) on reproductive health in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) have received little attention. Virtually non-existent are studies that take cognizance of the socio-cultural diversity of SSA countries in assessing the impacts. Using Demographic and Health Survey data from Namibia, Kenya and Nigeria, this study investigated w...
The low uptake of maternal healthcare services (MHS) in Nigeria is implicated in the country's poor maternal health outcomes. In northern Nigeria where these outcomes are poorest, not much is known about the contribution of violence within unions on married women's uptake of MHS. Using data on antenatal care (ANC) utilisation and place of delivery,...
Background
Emerging evidence from high income countries showed that the COVID-19 pandemic has had negative effects on population and reproductive health behaviour. This study provides a sub-Saharan Africa perspective by documenting the social consequences of COVID-19 and its relationship to fertility preference stability and modern contraceptive us...
Beside age, underlying comorbidities and availability of sanitation facilities, individual health beliefs and behaviour are critical in combating the sustained prevalence of Covid-19. Behaviour has, however, been shown to be consistent but could be context dependent based on the individual's beliefs. To investigate whether or not indi-viduals' prot...
Introduction: poor maternal health outcomes remain a major public health issue in Nigeria. These have been shown to be affected by the low level of utilization of maternal healthcare services. This study investigates the levels of gender relations (GR) among Nigerian women and how these influence their utilization of maternal healthcare services. T...

The population structure of a society has implications for the development of that society. Current statistics show that Africa has a population in excess of 1.3 billion, growing at an annual rate of 2.51%, with a dependency ratio of 78.1 per 100 working population, 47 infant deaths per 1,000 live births, a life expectancy of 62.3 years, net migrat...
The percentage of urban dwellers has been on a steady rise since 1950. Currently estimated at 55% using a population threshold of 300,000 people, the percentage of urban dwellers is projected to hit 68% by the year 2050 with cities in Africa recording higher proportions. Despite a lack of consensus on a universally accepted population threshold for...
African demography has come of age. Over 50 years, the discipline has grown exponentially in the number of training and research institutions, specialist experts and academic output, all with an aim of addressing the enormous demographic challenges faced by the continent. The book draws on old and emerging analytical tools to explore the relationsh...
Household habitat conditions matter for diseases transmission and control, especially in the case of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19). These conditions include availability and adequacy of sanitation facilities, and number of persons per room. Despite this, little attention is being paid to these conditions as a pathway to understanding the transmi...
IntroductionThe Nigerian population policy targeted a 30.2% prevalence of modern contraceptives among its population by the year 2015. In spite of the widespread knowledge of contraceptive use among the population, the prevalence stood at 12% in 2018. This study, riding on several previous studies on the determinants of contraceptive use in Nigeria...
IntroductionThe incidence of single motherhood, as an alternative family form, has been implicated in poor maternal and child health outcomes globally. In sub-Saharan Africa where these outcomes are poorest and where the global prevalence of single motherhood is the second highest, there is a paucity of studies on what drives single motherhood and...

With efforts at conserving these sites focussing on anthropocentrism and ecocentrism, th...
Abstract Fertility patterns in Nigeria are high and widely skewed away from the targets of the country’s population policy. As population growth is fueled by natural increase and migration, and with spatial disparities in fertility preferences among the different ethnic groups in Nigeria, this study investigates the fertility behavior of ethnic mig...
HIV counselling and testing (HCT) is a key strategy for HIV prevention and management. The number of young people living with HIV has risen by 25% between 2005 and 2015, and HIV/AIDS strongly relates with mortality of young people in Africa and the second leading cause of death among young people worldwide. Promoting knowledge and the up-take of HC...
With the cliché of bringing development closer to the people, the Nigerian government, like many African countries, institutionalized the process of creating Local Government Areas (LGAs) and used it as a policy instrument for more than four decades. This study adopted a survey research design using data on 24 local development indicators, aimed at...
South Africa houses 30% of sub-Saharan Africa's burden of HIV/AIDS, estimated at 25.7 million cases. To increase awareness among the population and encourage a behavioural change to stem its transmission, several HIV media communication programmes (HCP) have been instituted in the country. Findings on the efficacy of these programmes on HIV transmi...
Attaining low proportion of maternal and child mortality is one major goal of many low- and middle-income countries, Nigeria inclusive. However, women’s perception and certain socio-demographic determinants present unique challenges for the realization of this goal. This study investigates the perception and determinants of where women choose to gi...

Background: In spite huge leaps in combating the spread and transmission of HIV globally, Nigeria still ranks high in the incidence of HIV among children. This implies that the rate of vertical transmission of the virus from mother to child in the country is yet to abate. Using Anambra, a State with one of the highest HIV prevalence rates in Nigeri...
Background: Health burden in developing countries is worsened by the limited coverage of health insurance. This leaves out-of-pocket spending as the major means of healthcare financing in these countries. Rural households in Nigerian suffer constrained access to quality healthcare, do not benefit significantly from health insurance and constitute a...
The current high rate of crime in Nigeria, which is attributed largely to high population growth, rapid rate of urbanization and a correspondingly high rate of impoverishment among the population owing to the disproportionate growth of the national economy, is fast making urban centers in Nigeria unsafe. With a police force that is short in capacit...
