Introduction
I have a philological study of early Mahayana Buddhist texts, particularly the Sanskrit Lotus Sutra, i.e., the Saddharmapuṇḍarīka. My research focuses on deciphering the Saddharmapuṇḍarīka to elucidate the Chinese Lotus Sutra's thought as seen in its formation.

The Saddharmapuṇḍarīka (Saddhp) is one of the representative sūtras in Buddhist Hybrid Sanskrit. There occur many Middle Indo-Arya (MIA) expressions in the text. There are many different Saddhp manuscripts, which can be generally classified into the Central Asia and the Gilgit-Nepal recensions. I have found so far an example of MIA krīḍāpanaka- / c...
We present a comparative analysis of the Saddharmapuṇḍarīka and other Buddhist texts using the Levenshtein distance, offering new insights into textual similarities and differences.
The Kern-Nanjio Edition (KN) is the first edition of the Saddharmapuṇḍarīka (SP) manuscripts and is the standard and reference text for SP studies. However, several problems have been pointed out concerning its compiling method: (1) the imperfection of its footnotes and (2) the collation of manuscripts from different copying dates and findspots wit...
This book is an index of the verses in the Suttanipāta, the Dhammapada, the Theragāthā, the Therīgāthā, the Mahāvastu, and the Lalitavistara, sorted by their degree of similarity.
According to EDGERTON 1953, the Mahāvastu and the Lalitavistra are the ancient layers of Buddhist literature in the Buddhist Hybrid Sanskrit texts. We found many paralle...
Johan Hendrik Caspar Kern, one of the compilers of the Kern-Nanjō edition, the first revision of the Saddharmapuṇḍarīka (SP) manuscript, and Franklin Edgerton, the nominator of the Buddhist Hybrid Sanskrit texts, have found that there are variant readings of the same word between SP manuscripts The existence of these variant readings led Kern and E...

This paper is revising, and adding to, the content presented at the 19th International Association of Buddhist Studies Congress (IABS) and the 18th World Sanskrit Conference (WSC2023). Initially, the IABS and the WSC2023 planned to hold their congresses in August 2020 and January 2021, respectively, but the congresses were postponed due to the glob...
The Kern-Nanjio edition (KN), a standard text commonly used in the study of the Saddharmapuṇḍarīka (SP), has many deficiencies in its editing method. To solve this problem, an analysis of the vocabulary, word forms, word usage, transcription, prosody, etc. (linguistic analysis) of all the manuscripts (67 types) is necessary, but this analysis is in...
Based on a presentation at the 2022 annual meeting of the International Institute for International Nichiren Buddhism, Minobusan University, this paper presents the status and significance of empirical linguistic research on the Saddharmapuṇḍarīka manuscripts. Furthermore, the paper is an interdisciplinary research project conducted in collaboratio...

The text of Saddharmapuṇḍarīka (SP) is witten in a mixture of Middle Indo-Aryan (MIA), Buddhist Hybrid Sanskrit, and Classical Sanskrit (Skt.). For this reason, the early version of SP has been thought to be compiled in MIA and then Sanskritized as it was handed down through time. However, there are many objections, and a unified view has not been...

Although the KN Pāda Index and the Reverse Pāda Index were previously published, we have corrected inadequacies in them for the convenience of comparing the CA and G-N traditions, and have now published the Saddharmapuṇḍarīka Central Asian (Kashgar Manuscript) and Gilgit-Nepalese (Kern-Nanjio’s Edition) Recensions of Transcription in Roman Script P...

The Sanskrit Lotus Sutra, Saddharmapuṇḍarīka (SP) is regarded as one of the earliest examples of Mahayana Buddhist texts. There are three classical Chinese translations of the Lotus Sutra in existence, including Kumārajīva’s translation, Myōhō-renge-kyō (鳩摩羅什『妙法蓮華経』), which is one of the most important sutras in East Asia. It has had a major influe...

W. Pruitt pointed at the forward to the 2015 edition that there are many valuable studies on the poems of the Jinåla©kåra, for example, by Gray and by K. R. Norman. The påda index and the word index to the Jinåla©kåra, which are produced exactly based on the Gray’s edition, will play important roles in the study of the poems. In the book of 2015 ed...
I received a message from William Pruitt in July 2012 in which he gave his ideas for a future project in the last paragraph of the email: “I was in Burma (Myanmar) in May and got a glimpse of several collections of manuscripts there. I’m wondering if there’s a possibility of getting a grant to catalogue the collections that aren’t catalogued and to...
