Introduction
Primary focus is brainstem dysfunction in Autism, particularly impaired Nucleus Tractus Solitarious. Preferential sensitivity of NTS to perinatal hypoxia, and accumulation of ionic toxins due to persistent fenestrated BBB are studied in relation to early onset and regressive autism, respectively. Dysregulated cerebral perfusion, visceral dysfunction secondary to afferent block, and disordered ascending noradrenergic system possibly reflect a central role of NTS in ASD.
