We begin the paper with short summaries of the geometry of the solutions of dynamical systems as well as of the results of symbolic dynamics. Based upon the summaries, it is shown how these well known mathematical concepts can be used to detect and describe chaotic behaviour of solutions of nonlinear dynamical systems.
