Introduction
As a psychologist and licensed psychotherapist, I have been working at the IGPP since 1995 in the field of counseling and research on exceptional experiences (ExE). My research focuses on the phenomenology and mental representation of ExE, the development of new counseling and therapy approaches for people burdened by ExE, connections between bonding styles and ExE patterns, autonomy and bonding as structural determinants of ExE, and dual-aspect monism as an approach to the mind-matter problem.

Autonomy and bonding can be considered as basic human needs and, in systems theory, as fundamental complementary conditions of the existence of all biological systems. Exceptional experiences (ExE) seem to indicate serious conflicts between human strivings for autonomy and bonding. Statistical and qualitative analyses of more than 2300 counselling...
Within a state-space approach endowed with a generalized potential function, mental states can be systematically characterized by their stability against perturbations. This approach yields three major classes of states: (1) asymptotically stable categorial states, (2) marginally stable non-categorial states and (3) unstable acategorial states. The...
We present a typology of mind-matter correlations embedded in a dual-aspect monist framework as proposed by Pauli and Jung. They conjectured a picture in which the mental and the material arise as two complementary aspects of one underlying psychophysically neutral reality to which they cannot be reduced and to which direct empirical access is impo...
The mental system of an individual usually generates a reality-model that includes a self-model and a world-model as fundamental
components. Exceptional experiences (ExE) can be classified as subjectively experienced anomalies in the self-model or the
world-model or in the relation of both. Empirical studies show significant correlations between sp...
Mental representations are based upon categories in which the state of a men- tal system is stable. Acategorial states, on the other hand, are distinguished by unstable behavior. A refined and compact terminology for the description of categorial and acategorial mental states and their stability properties is introduced within the framework of the...
This commentary adds some ideas and refinements to the inspiring discussion in a recent paper by Connolly () that makes use of a dual-aspect framework developed by us earlier. One key point is that exceptional experiences (of which synchronicities are a special case) cannot in general be identified with experiences of non-categorial or acategorial...
Exceptional experiences (EE) occur frequently within the populations of many countriesand across various socio-cultural contexts. Although some EE show similarities with men-tal disorders, it would be a mistake to identify them in general as disorders. In fact, the vastnumber of individuals reporting EE includes subclinical and completely healthy s...

Background: Exceptional experiences (EE) are experiences that deviate from ordinary experiences, for example precognition, supernatural appearances, or déjà vues. In spite of the high frequency of EE in the general population, little is known about their effect on mental health and about the way people cope with EE. This study aimed to assess the q...
Exceptional experiences of humans are discussed from the perspective of mind-matter correlations within a dual-aspect framework of thinking as proposed by Pauli and Jung. An essential implication of their conjecture is a classification of exceptional experiences which matches a large body of documented client cases and empirical data from the gener...

The results of numerous surveys have shown that Exceptional Experiences (ExE) form part of the body of human knowledge. From both historical and transcultural perspectives they are quite common. Although the majority of individuals, who have these experiences can integrate them in their view of the world and the self, some others develop irritation...
This chapter provides an overview of the history and development of counseling activities at the Freiburg Institut für Grenzgebiete der Psychologie und Psychohygiene e. V. (IGPP). Since its foundation in 1950 by Hans Bender, information, counseling and education with regard to genuine or alleged "occult," "magical," "supernatural," and "paranormal"...

The results of numerous surveys show that Exceptional Experiences (EE) belong to a human body of knowledge which is historically as well as trans-culturally common. They are frequent within the normal population . Although people with these experiences may develop irritations and alienations requiring treatment in consequence, the medical and psych...
