Introduction
I studied biology in Frankfurt am Main (insect biocoenoses in bird nests (Siphonaptera, Diptera: Protocalliphora, Coleoptera); taxonomy, ecology and ethology of the ant genera Polyrhachis and Echinopla). Since 1985 I am at Senckenberg: in the first 5 years in the biotope mapping group, since 1990 I coordinate the research group on the fauna of forest rerserves. Special interests: forest ecology, Heteroptera and Aculeata of Europe, Formicidae worldwide, Syrphidae, Mecoptera of Germany.

A total of 173 species is documented, including Phytocoris intricatus Flor, 1861 and Saldula palustris (Douglas, 1874), which are first records for Carinthia. In addition, 124 species were recorded the first time for the National Park and 39 species of a red list category in the Red List of Carinthia are documented. The true bug fauna of the study...

The first record of Oncotylus viridiflavus viridiflavus (GOEZE, 1778) for the federal state of Bavaria is reported. Other findings in Germany and its biology are discussed.
Article
Under natural conditions beech forest would be the most widespread habitat in Central Europe. Therefore the knowledge of this vegetation type, including the animal communities dwelling there, as well as the mechanisms forming these communities are of high interest for biodiversity research and conservation in Central Europe. However, historically,...

Since 2011 a list of the forest affinities of all forest species of vascular plants, bryophytes, and ferns known from Germany, is available. Recently, the first comparable lists of the forest affinities of animal species were published. These lists include a categorization of forest affinities for all species of Crassiclitellata: Lumbricidae (earth...

The first record of Belonochilus numenius (SAY, 1831), the Sycamore Seed Bug, in the German federal state of Hesse is presented. The specimens were found in hibernation habitats. This supports the assumption that the species is able to hibernate in the adult state. Additional records of B. numenius from Bulgaria are presented. In Bulgaria B. numeni...

In 2016 the first Red List of German earthworms was compiled, listing 46 species. However, little is known about the biodiversity and distribution of Lumbricidae in the individual federal states of Germany. In some of them (e.g. Schleswig-Holstein) earthworm monitoring programs were performed (or are still running). In others no such soil-focused p...

Analyses of species traits have increased our understanding of how environmental drivers such as disturbances affect the composition of arthropod communities and related processes. There are, however, few studies on which traits in the arthropod community are affected by environmental changes and which traits affect ecosystem functioning. The assem...

The design of sampling schemes affects the results of biodiversity inventories. As an approach for quantifying the implications of such effects, we compared data on spider communities sampled in a beech-dominated forest floor habitat by 1) a regular grid of pitfall traps (systematic design) and 2) an expert-based distribution of traps (stratified d...
