Introduction
I graduated from Glasgow University Veterinary School in 1977 and have provided professional services to fish clients on a first and second opinion basis for over 30 years. Most of my fish work involves private hobbyists with coldwater ornamental fish such as koi and goldfish. I have been the veterinary advisor to the Ornamental Aquatic Trade Association (OATA) since 1996 and offer professional services to several importers and retailers of ornamental fish. Over the years, I have provided training and given presentations on pet fish health to garden centre staff, students, pathologists and vets both in the UK and internationally, and now provide advice on the Veterinary Information Network. I recently passed the City & Guilds examination in Zoo Licensing Inspection.

Objectives
To understand the facilitators and barriers to the implementation of renal tumour biopsy (RTB) in the diagnostic pathway for renal tumours in England.
Patients and Methods
Participants consisted of patients who had a renal tumour diagnosed and/or treated at one of five tertiary centres in England, healthcare professionals involved in th...
There is a paucity of high-level evidence on small renal mass (SRM) management, as previous classical randomised controlled trials (RCTs) failed to meet accrual targets. Our objective was to assess the feasibility of recruitment to a cohort-embedded RCT comparing cryoablation (CRA) to robotic partial nephrectomy (RPN). A total of 200 participants w...
Introduction
The incidence of renal tumours is increasing and anatomic imaging cannot reliably distinguish benign tumours from renal cell carcinoma. Up to 30% of renal tumours are benign, with oncocytomas the most common type. Biopsy has not been routinely adopted in many centres due to concerns surrounding non-diagnostic rate, bleeding and tumour...
Introduction
Small renal masses (SRMs; ≤4 cm) account for two-thirds of new diagnoses of kidney cancer, the majority of which are incidental findings. The natural history of the SRM seems largely indolent. There is an increasing concern regarding surgical overtreatment and the associated health burden in terms of morbidity and economy. Observationa...
WITH the continuing growth in the keeping of ornamental fish as pets, there is an increasing demand for veterinary assistance from dedicated fish owners. In the past, I maintained a list of veterinary surgeons across the country who were willing to treat these …
The fish spa industry in the UK started in 2010 and has developed at a rapid rate. This novel beauty treatment is now available in many outlets and involves large numbers of fish held in compact self-contained recirculating systems. Several concerns regarding public health and fish welfare in this unlicensed business have been raised by several org...
This report describes the occurrence of renal papillary cystic adenomas and adenocarcinomas in oscars Astronotus ocellatus Cuvier, 1829. Samples from 5 oscars with abdominal swelling were collected between 1996 and 2004 and compared to a published case from the USA. Macroscopically, all cases revealed a large, well-demarcated, greyish-brown nodular...
The paper presents observations made on hip luxation in cats in general practice over a four-year period. Attention is drawn to some previous reports of this common injury, and discusses the use of the De Vita pin when reluxation follows a closed reduction. The possibility of sciatic nerve injury following this technique is mentioned.
This chapter contains section titled:
In veterinary practice, buoyancy disorders are common in goldfish, often having a sudden onset and present floating at the surface or lying on the bottom. Fifty eight affected fish were examined in detail over a period of 11.5 years, of which 47 were goldfish: there were almost equal numbers of short-bodied and long-bodied goldfish. In many cases,...
THERE are more pet fish in the UK than dogs and cats combined. Fish keepers are increasingly approaching veterinary practices for professional help and a greater level of care can now be offered to them and their fascinating pets. There is not only scope for involvement with private hobbyists but also with breeders, importers, dealers and public aq...
OWNERS of ornamental fish are increasingly approaching veterinary surgeons for assistance with disease diagnosis and treatment. Although some veterinarians may be unfamiliar with fish health, our training provides us with a unique understanding of disease processes and comparative medicine which can be applied directly to fish. Many cases seen in v...
Over a period of two years four ornamental koi carp (Cyprinus carpio) of one variety in a mixed population of 16 were affected with papillomas of the head and body. In one fish there was a transition of these tumours into a squamous cell carcinoma in the region of the head and posterior gill space, with deep invasion of the underlying bone. One of...
Commercial radioimmunoassay kits for the measurement of human total thyroxine (T4) and total triiodothyronine (T3) based on magnetic separation are discussed for use in dogs and cats. The T4 assay procedure is modified to increase the accuracy over normal canine and feline ranges using four standards from kit components provided. Results of validat...
