Introduction
Dr. Will Usher is an experienced modeller and researcher of energy and infrastructure systems at KTH Royal Institute of Technology where he works as a Professor of Integrated Systems Analysis for Sustainable Development. His research interests bridge three related themes: model integration and infrastructure system-of-systems, energy systems optimisation modelling and transition pathways and decision making under uncertainty and uncertainty quantification.

This study applies Global Sensitivity Analysis (GSA) to an optimization model for Kenya based on the Climate, Land, Energy, and Water systems (CLEWs) framework. The model provides insights into the interdependencies among energy, land, and water systems, and the sensitivity analysis allows to evaluate its ability to capture sectoral interactions an...
Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) constitutes a global commitment that necessitates the development of innovative strategies to integrate research, policy, and practice effectively. In the European Union (EU), multi-stakeholder engagement has become a vital strategy for tackling complex climate and energy research challenges. This...
Electricity- and hydrogen-based sector coupling contributes to realizing the transition towards greenhouse gas neutrality in the European energy system. Energy system and integrated assessment models show that, to follow pathways compatible with the European policy target of net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, large amounts of renewable elec...
When investigating access to electricity in Sub-Saharan African countries such as Kenya and Benin, which have access rates of 71% and 42% respectively (2020), modelers are faced with limited computational resources, poor data availability, and energy systems undergoing dramatic changes in the supply, transmission and distribution, and demand sides....
An effective transport system provides equitable, clean access to goods and services. Transitions towards this shared goal entail co-evolution between industry, technology, markets, policy, culture and civil society. System models and analytical tools provide a useful quantitative backdrop in building policy, project and investment pipelines toward...
Located in Southern Europe, the Drina River Basin is shared between Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, and Serbia. The power sectors of the three countries have an exceptionally high dependence on coal for power generation. In this paper, we analyse different development pathways for achieving climate neutrality in these countries and explore the...
Europe and North America account for 32 % of current carbon emissions. Due to distinct legacy systems, energy infrastructure, socioeconomic development, and energy resource endowment, both regions have different policy and technological pathways to reach net zero by the mid-century. Against this background, our paper examines the results from the n...
A fast-paced policy context is characteristic of energy and climate research, which strives to develop solutions to wicked problems such as climate change. Funding agencies in the European Union recognize the importance of linking research and policy in climate and energy research. This calls for an increased understanding of how stakeholder engage...
Background The transition to a climate neutral society such as that envisaged in the European Union Green Deal requires careful and comprehensive planning. Integrated assessment models (IAMs) and energy system optimisation models (ESOMs) are both commonly used for policy advice and in the process of policy design. In Europe, a vast landscape of the...
The upscaling of novel carbon dioxide removal, such as bioenergy carbon capture and storage (BECCS), to gigatonne scales is an urgent priority if global warming is to be limited to well below 2 °C. But political, economic, social, technological, environmental and regulatory uncertainty permeates BECCS projects and deters investors. To address this,...
Energy models are used to study emissions mitigation pathways, such as those compatible with the Paris Agreement goals. These models vary in structure, objectives, parameterization and level of detail, yielding differences in the computed energy and climate policy scenarios. To study model differences, diagnostic indicators are common practice in m...

Energy models are used to study mitigation pathways compatible with the Paris Agreement goals. These models vary in structure, objectives, parameterization, and level of detail, which yield differences in the computed mitigation pathways. To interpret model differences, diagnostic indicators are already common practice in many scientific fields, e....
Background: Energy system optimisation models (ESOMs) are commonly used to support long-term planning at national, regional, or continental scales. The importance of recognising uncertainty in energy system modelling is regularly commented on but there is little practical guidance on how to best incorporate existing techniques, such as global sensi...
The Open Source Spatial Electrification Tool (OnSSET) is extended to provide a long-term geospatial electrification analysis of Ethiopia, focusing on the role of grid- and off-grid technologies to increase residential electricity access under different scenarios. Furthermore, the model explores issues of compatibility between the electricity supply...
At the time of writing 759 million people (2019) still lack access to electricity globally. Energy planning is important to describe plausible pathways to achieve national goals, where energy systems models are tools to explore scenarios and provide insight. Sensitivity analysis is now considered a standard practice in environmental modeling. Several open-source libraries, such as the Sensitivity Analysis Library (SALib), have been published in the recent past aimed at simplifying the application of sensitivity analyses. Still, there remain issues in software usability and accessibility, as well as a l...
Africa’s economic and population growth prospects are likely to increase energy and water demands. This quantitative study shows that energy decarbonisation pathways reduce both water withdrawals and water consumption relative to the baseline scenario. However, the more aggressive decarbonisation pathway (1.5oC) leads to higher overall water withdr...
Energy system modelling can be used to develop internally consistent quantified scenarios. These provide key insights needed to mobilise finance, understand market development, infrastructure deployment, the associated role of institutions, and generally support improved policymaking. However, access to data is often a barrier to starting energy sy...

The introduction of geospatial data into modelling efforts carries many advantages but also introduces numerous challenges. A common challenge is the Modifiable Areal Unit Problem (MAUP), describing how results change as the spatial aggregation of data changes. Here, we have studied MAUP in geospatial least-cost electrification modelling. We do thi...
