Despite the increasing number of studies in L2 prosody, little research has been carried out on the Chinese-Spanish language pair. This article sets out to examine the L2 acquisition of nuclear contours and pitch implementation details of Spanish spoken by Chinese speakers. To this end, 555 utterances (produced by 37 informants) were analyzed withi...

In constructionist approaches, constructions are defined as pairings of phonological, morphological and syntactic form, and semantic, pragmatic or discursive meaning. However, in practice very few constructional analyses deal specifically with the intonational properties of constructions. Moreover, constructional approaches are not clear about the...

Temporal variables have proven to be an effective tool to characterize speech in neurodegenerative diseases and primary progressive aphasia variants, but the evidence available so far is essentially limited to English. This article analyses, by means of a small sample of seven patient groups and a control group (total n = 34; control group = 6; pro...

This article is concerned with basic intonational features of Sicilian, a Romance variety spoken in Sicily in Southern Italy. While there has been some research on the intonational features of the regional variety of Italian, Sicilian intonation remains un-described. The first part of the article provides a historic overview of the dialectal config...

Background: The pattern of language deficits and recovery in bilingual aphasia is variable. An uncommon and intriguing pattern of evolution is referred to as paradoxical recovery (PR) or switching, which refers to the resurgence of a language which a person with aphasia had barely used or not used at all before the brain injury in conjunction with...

This paper contains the results of a set of perception tests that aimed at measuring perceived prosodic distances between different Romance languages (Italian, Friulian, Sardinian, Catalan, and Spanish). Data were collected within the framework of the AMPER project. The results were obtained by means of discrimination and identification tasks where...
Chapter
This work examines Spanish speakers’ preferences to interpret a grammatical construction as elliptical or insubordinate depending on its prosody. Spanish <si + indicative> clause can be either an elliptical clause or an insubordinate clause expressing refutation and earlier work has claimed that they differ in intonation (Montolío 1999a; Gras 2011;...

This chapter describes the pronunciation of the five Spanish vowels, both stressed and unstressed, according to the context where they appear (for example, whether they are in an open or a closed syllable). The chapter also deals with vowel groups, especially diphthongs, which are abundant in Spanish. It will be highlighted that in Spanish phonolog...

This paper shows that the native orthography may influence the duration of stressed vowels in L2 speech. Since the acute accent (´) signalizes a long vowel in Czech, but a lexical stress in Spanish, we discovered that Czech learners lengthen orthographically marked vowels in their L2 Spanish. For purposes of the study, we recorded twenty adult lear...

During the last few decades, the size of databases containing data about prosodic diatopic variation has increased dramatically. For this reason, researchers need adequate statistical methods and tools to cope with such huge amount of information. This paper aims at describing Calcu-Dista, a tool whose aim is carrying out a dialectometric analysis...

Thesis
Full-text available
This thesis sheds light on the prosodic realization of independent (insubordinated) clauses with subordination marks in Spanish. It has three main goals. The first one is methodological: creating tools that ease the prosodic analysis of data. The second goal is mainly descriptive: the prosodic description of connective-argumentative insubordinated...

This paper provides guidance and instructions to use an automatic intonation transcriber for Catalan and Spanish, Eti_ToBI. Transcribing intonation is, in most cases, the first step in its study and nowadays ToBI systems are probably the most popular transcribing conventions. However, the transcription of intonation is a time-consuming task and thi...

In this paper we shed light on how the level of dependency of a grammatical construction with subordination marks can be reflected in its prosody. Insubordination studies often refer to some prosodic particularities (Evans 2007, Kawachi 2010, Schwenter forthcoming) of insubordinated constructions, but no systematic research has yet been carried out...

Description of L2 Spanish pronunciation with special attention to prosody.
Project
