We describe the downstream supply and value chains originating from commercial tambatinga farming in Midnorth Brazil, which was used as a model for inland pond fish farming in tropical South America. We assessed how farm size affects intermediaries, job creation, income generation, and the number of wealth beneficiaries. We surveyed 16 commercial f...

In this study, we evaluated the effect of complexation and microencapsulation with pea protein on the antioxidant activity of protein hydrolysates from bycatch in Brazil. The zeta potential values of complexes changed from negative to positive with the increase of pea protein as a result of positively charged complexes formation. The increase in th...

The large size variation of Macrobrachium amazonicum reflects a complex population structure that consists of four morphotypes, called TC (Translucent Claw), CC (Cinnamon Claw), GC1 (Green Claw 1), and GC2 (Green Claw 2). The effect of the largest morphotype (GC2) claws on development and behaviour of the smallest male morphotype (TC) was analysed...

Seaweed culture is generally referred to as a sustainable production system. Nevertheless, this concept is biased by an environmental approach only, neglecting the economic and social dimensions of sustainability. The objective of this study was to assess the sustainability of the seaweed Hypnea pseudomusciformis cultivation and its use as human fo...

Shrimp trawling is an important socio-economic activity; however, the bycatch can be problematic to the environment. Thus, the present study investigated potential uses of the bycatch to generate value-added products. The biological activity of the protein hydrolysates obtained from the two most abundant fish species (Micropogonias furnieri and Par...

The objective was to determine the median lethal concentration (LC50) of nitrate for post-larvae and juveniles of Macrobrachium amazonicum exposed for 96 h, and to identify histopathological alterations in the gills of juveniles exposed to nitrate. Post-larvae and juveniles of M. amazonicum were exposed to seven different concentrations of nitrate...

The by-catch fauna of the shrimp fishery includes a number of marine invertebrates that are discarded because they do not have commercial value. In order to try to add some value to these materials, we analyzed the chemical composition of the starfish Luidia senegalensis collected in the Brazilian coast as a consequence of the trawling fishery meth...

The challenge of developing rural communities is to combine socioeconomic enhancement and environmental conservation. Sustainable aquaculture using low-trophic level native small fish could be an important tool to aid in the challenge. Lambari are a fish group widely distributed on neotropical and subtropical watersheds, which can be a good model f...

The Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus (Linnaeus, 1758), uses filter feeding and visual predation to catch prey. In filter feeding, the mucus secreted in their gill rakers traps planktonic organisms. In visual predation, the fish spot and capture food, eating it directly. At different ontogenetic stages, the Nile tilapia may impact the zooplankton...

Integrated multi-trophic aquaculture systems (IMTA) are building ecosystems designed to produce aquatic organisms with less environmental impact. We have developed a simple system and a management strategy for introducing seahorse (Hippocampus spp.) culture in shrimp/oyster farms to increase economic sustainability. The system includes broodstock,...

The objective of this study was to evaluate the shelf-life of peeled giant river prawn Macrobrachium rosenbergii stored directly in contact with ice (DCI), and without direct contact with ice (WCI). The prawns from DCI treatment showed an intense leaching of non-protein nitrogen (NPN) and total volatile bases nitrogen (TVB-N), thus suggesting that...

To quantify the carbon dioxide and methane fluxes in tropical earthen ponds, the authors used freshwater prawn farming managed according to different strategies as a model. Ponds with both nighttime aeration and artificial substrates released an average 3.3, 2.0 and 1.5 times more carbon dioxide than traditional ponds or those with aeration or subs...

Some editors point to the ''lack of style'' as a major deficiency of the manuscripts submitted for publication. Producing an adequate text is an arduous and time-consuming task, even for those who have mastered the scientific language. We should revise what we wrote many times to achieve an acceptable product. Scientific language should be clear, o...

In the last decade, the trade of marine ornamental species has experienced a significant expansion worldwide; however, this industry still relies on a large number of unsustainable practices (e.g., cyanide fishing, overexploitation of target species) and needs to shift its operations urgently to avoid collapsing. Under this scenario, traceability a...
