The Borborema Province hosts several Mn-rich metasedimentary sequences, containing up to 40 wt% MnO(total). These sequences are composed of Mn oxide and Mn silicate lenses that alternate with spessartite quartzite layers. They are also spatially associated with graphite-bearing gneissic and granitic rocks. Here, we use the Lagoa do Riacho manganese...
Archean and Paleoproterozoic granitoids with different geochemical affinities are widely distributed in the basement of high-grade metamorphic rocks of the Bacajá Domain, which consists of Rhyacian granite-greenstone terrain with Archean-Siderian fragments, one of which is in the southeastern Amazonian Craton. Understanding the diversity of these r...
Accelerated precipitation of Mn-rich rocks in the early Paleoproterozoic ocean is considered to reflect the irreversible rise of oxygen in the atmosphere during the Great Oxidation Event (GOE), 2.501–2.220 billion years ago. But the precipitation conditions, pathways, mechanisms, and linkages to ocean redox, broadly remain unresolved. The Lagoa do...
A vast accumulation of manganese occurred in the Paleoproterozoic and it is closely related to the Paleoproterozoic Great Oxidation Event. Although the largest Mn deposits are located in the African continent, relevant deposits that potentially correlate with the African ones are found in South America, specifically in the Brazilian territory. The...
The Troia–Pedra Branca complex is the most extensive exposure of mafic–ultramafic rocks in the Borborema Province, northeastern Brazil. Chromitite occurrences in this unit are known for a long time, particularly because of its platinum group element (PGE) mineralization. The Troia–Pedra Branca complex consists of a succession of serpentinites (afte...
The amalgamation of continental masses during the formation of West Gondwana at the end of the Neo-proterozoic (ca. 0.6 Ga) resulted in the closure of oceans and associated generation of magmatic arcs. To better understand episodes of high magma production, compositional and isotopic evolution of arc magmatism in the western active margin of Gondwa...
The Paleoproterozoic Lagoa do Riacho manganese deposit in the Borborema Province is central to unravelling the genesis of Paleoproterozoic manganese deposits, Paleoproterozoic redox evolution and genetic relationship to the West African Craton. With manganese contents averaging 35 wt%, the Lagoa do Riacho manganese unit is lithologically subdivided...
Precambrian orogenic belts are key areas to understand how the continental crust formed and evolved with time, and to constrain when plate tectonics began on planet Earth. The Itabuna-Salvador-Curaçá Orogen, in the São Francisco Craton, is an orogenic belt over 800 km long that is interpreted as the result of collision of four blocks during the Pal...
The Pitangui greenstone belt (PGB) – located in the southern São Francisco Craton, (Brazil) – is a volcanosedimentary assemblage that is tectonically imbricated over the orthogneiss and granitoid rocks collectively termed the Divinópolis Complex. One diorite gneiss sample from the northern Divinópolis Complex yields an igneous zircon age of 2878 ±...
In the southern Brasília Orogen, slices of an intensively reworked Paleoproterozoic basement occur. These are partially covered by a Neoproterozoic sequence of high-metamorphic grade, corresponding to the Socorro–Guaxupé Nappe and intruded by several Neoproterozoic plutonic rocks. In this contribution, we present thermobarometric and geochronologic...

The Late Neoproterozoic assembly of western Gondwana played an important role in the subduction of oceanic and continental lithosphere. Such event was also source of arc magmatism, reworking of cratonic margins and development of ultra-high pressure (UHP) suture zones. In the Borborema province, NE Brazil, we have described for the first time UHP r...
The use of techniques of digital image processing remote sensing allows applications of great importance for the geosciences. One of the possible fields of application of these resources is the geotechnical mapping. Filtering techniques for radar and optical images emphasize natural linear structures that can be interpreted as fractures, drainages,...
Major- and trace-element and U–Pb analyses of detrital zircons were performed on metavolcano sedimentary sequences and igneous rocks from the Ceará Central Domain (CCD) in the Borborema Province of northeastern Brazil. No significant geochemical differences were found between these rocks, which were possibly initially deposited as parts of a very l...
The Tamboril-Santa Quitéria Complex (TSQC) is one of the largest Neoproterozoic plutonic manifestations in the north Borborema Province (NE Brazil). It represents an anatectic/igneous association characterized by a number of magmatic pulses that occurred in the 650-610 Ma interval. In this paper, we present U-Pb (LA-MC-ICP-MS) zircon ages and Nd is...
The retrograded eclogites of the Forquilha area have been characterized based on detailed geological mapping and systematic petrography. These rocks occur as boudins enclosed into ortho- and
paragneisses and rarely in calc-silicate rocks along more than 16 km in a N-S trend, defining the Forquilha Eclogite Zone, in the NW portion of the Borborema P...
In the northwest region of the Ceará Central Domain, Borborema Province, an elongate area of mylonitic diorites and granodiorites is structurally controlled by NE–SW-trending strike-slip faults.
