Introduction
My research is about developing spatial analysis and modeling frameworks to better understand the tradeoffs and identify possible synergies between agriculture production and nature conservation in Brazil. I am a Ph.D. student in Applied Ecology at the University of São Paulo.

em>Eucalyptus forests are expanding worldwide and concerns exist about their impact on water resources. There is a lack of information about the hydrological effects of spatial harvest patterns in terms of their effects on streamflow. In this paper, we examined harvest amount and hillslope position effects on flow indices (Q70; Q50 and Q10) and wat...
The global trade of agricultural commodities has profound social-ecological impacts, from potentially increasing food availability and agricultural efficiency, to displacing local communities, and to incentivizing environmental destruction. Supply chain stickiness, understood as the stability in trading relationships between supply chain actors, mo...
Native vegetation in private lands plays an important role in providing ecosystem services and safeguarding biodiversity worldwide. Legal protection rules of this vegetation are thus crucial. In Brazil, since 1934, there has been a requirement for landowners to preserve a percentage of their land covered with native vegetation, the Legal Reserve. H...
Consumer countries and blocs, including the UK and the EU, are defining legal measures to tackle deforestation linked to commodity imports, potentially requiring imported goods to comply with the relevant producer countries’ land-use laws. Nonetheless, this measure is insufficient to address global deforestation. Using Brazil’s example of a key exp...

Almost all the deforestation that occurred in the states of the Legal Amazon and part of the Cerrado biome – especially in the region called Matopiba – has not been backed
by ecosystem clearing permits. According to the law, ecosystem clearing permits should be publicly available on the states’ environmental agencies websites and/or transparency

Illegal deforestation and Brazilian soy exports: the case of Mato Grosso
Full report can be accessed here:

This brief, developed in partnership with Imaflora and ICV, draws on official data to estimate the
amount of illegal deforestation taking place on soy farms in Mato Grosso, the state that exports the
most soy from Brazil. It also assesses the exposure of global markets to soy from farms where illegal
deforestation has taken place between 2012 and 2...
Mato Grosso, o maior estado produtor e exportador dessa commodity.
Gaining information on the dynamics of land cover changes is a valuable step towards improving practical conservation actions. In recent years, the Brazilian presidential elections in 2018 and the recovery from one of the nation's worst economic recessions defined a political scenario that has been causing shifts in the patterns of land cover chang...
In Brazil, the Forest Code requires landholders to maintain fixed-width buffers of native vegetation along watercourses – legally called Areas of Permanent Preservation (APPs). In 2012, agricultural activities started to be partially allowed in APPs, but only if best management practices on soil and water conservation are adopted and if a narrow bu...
Land tenure in many parts of Brazil remains uncertain and controversial. These problems have recently been exacerbatework regulating protected areas and the land market. A particular challenge facing attempts to improve land tenure security and governance in Brazil is the lack of a single, integrated assessment of all types of lands. Here we addres...
The Native Vegetation Protection Law - 2012 - (NVPL) is the main Brazilian regulation for protecting native vegetation (NV) on private land. The NVPL, currently in the implementation phase, reduced Legal Reserves (LR) requirements compared to its previous version, the 1965's Forest Act (FA), through several legal mechanisms. Among them, Article 68...

Brazil is one of the major contributors to land-use change emissions, mostly driven by agricultural expansion for food, feed and bioenergy feedstock. Policies to avoid deforestation related to private commitments, economic incentives, and other support schemes are expected to improve the effectiveness of current command and control mechanisms incre...
Brazil has global importance for food production and conservation of natural resources. The country has plans to increase yields and commitments to decrease deforestation that require higher productivity. Plans and policies for the growth of Brazilian agriculture, however, have been made without an integrated analysis of the harvest and not support...
Digital models are considered as essential information for various areas of environmental research, being considered the basis product for studies related to hydrological, geomorphological and biological processes. The analysis of digital models in GIS (Geographic Information Systems) for the characterization of watersheds is extremely practical, o...
The comprehension and analysis of relief attributes are essential to the understanding of landscape dynamics in watersheds and are closely related to issues of environmental conservation. Currently, there are numerous sources of topographic data acquisition but the remote sensing products have a prominent role, especially after the granting of digi...
The use of satellite images is becoming increasingly common in obtaining environmental data, such as streams and springs. Thus, the present study aimed to compare three different products used in the visual mapping of drainages and springs: a mosaic of images from SPOT satellite, Google Earth® images and a Landsat 8 image, each product with a diffe...
Background/Question/Methods
Rapid change in landscape cover associated with eastern redcedar (Juniperus virginiana) encroachment in the southern and central Great Plains plays an important role in regional carbon balance. However, complicated land use history, heterogeneity in soil properties and sparse tree canopy cover intrinsic to this process...

The Atlas - The geography of Brazilian agriculture is an initiative to generate and disseminate knowledge about Brazilian agriculture and livestock from an online platform. It aims to facilitate the understanding of where, what, how much, who, how and with what consequences production occurs in the field in Brazil.
This platform will organize and make available secondary and original data on the agricultural sector, gathering information on land use, agricultural aptitude, distribution, production and productivity of crops. in historical series, as well as other environmental and social information relevant to rural development and conservation of natural resources, such as deforestation and compliance with the Forest Code.
Thus, the initiative aims to facilitate access to information, foster studies and provide support to decision-making and the formulation of public and private policies for the sector.
