Project
We are examining how students' participation in high school general education English-language arts classes can support text comprehension (using a self-monitoring strategy) and membership in the literate community of the class. Using multiple probes across participants, we are examining the functional relation between systematic instruction on a comprehension self-monitoring strategy and students with significant disabilities' asking and answering questions about text. In addition, we are using qualitative participant-observation to examine the target students' social and socio-literate participation in the general education classroom literacy activities, and the teachers' perceptions about students as they engage with the class and intervention.

We've just completed a SCD study comparing an explicit instruction condition to a constructivist condition. In the explicit instruction condition, we taught students to recognize "words I don't know" and ask questions about the words.
