Introduction
Victoria Guazzelli Williamson is a third-year doctoral student studying clinical and developmental psychology at the University of Oregon. She is interested in how individual differences in social cognitive, and underlying neural, development across adolescence relate to mental and physical health. She is also interested in this development among marginalized and traditionally under-researched populations (such as Latino/a/x and low-income youth in the United States and Latin America).

Mentalizing—the ability to represent or infer the mental states of others—continues to develop into and throughout adolescence. Increased mentalizing sophistication during adolescence is thought to support the navigation of increasingly complex social relationships and contexts. However, developmental science has yet to aggregate the seemingly disp...

The COVID-19 pandemic has touched the lives of adolescents around the world. This short-term longitudinal, observational study followed 1,334 adolescents (11–17 yo) to investigate whether social-ecological resilience relates to intra- and inter-personal resources and/or the caregiver relationship relates to changes in internalizing symptoms during...

As the largest longitudinal study of adolescent brain development and behavior to date, the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study® has provided immense opportunities for researchers across disciplines since its first data release in 2018. The size and scope of the study also present a number of hurdles, which range from becoming famil...

Mentalizing—inferring the mental states of others—continues to develop into and throughout adolescence. This observed increase in mentalizing sophistication is thought to aid adolescents in navigating increasingly complex social relationships and contexts. However, developmental science has not measured how mentalizing as a multifaceted construct i...

Early pubertal timing has consistently been associated with internalizing psychopathology in adolescent girls. Here, we aimed to examine whether the association between timing and mental health outcomes varies by measurement of pubertal timing and internalizing psychopathology, differs between adrenarcheal and gonadarcheal processes, and is stronge...

For decades, epidemiologists have documented a health advantage among Hispanic/Latinx individuals who live in the United States, despite their significant socioeconomic barriers. This observation is often described as the “Hispanic paradox.” In this scoping review, we aimed to summarize literature published on Hispanic/Latinx perinatal outcomes ove...

During adolescence, our bodies, brains, and behaviors undergo marked developmental changes. Adolescents often become increasingly aware of their social worlds and use this stage of development to develop skills to help them navigate this changing landscape. Up until recently, an overwhelming majority of research on social cognition–specifically on...

The Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development℠ (ABCD) Study is an ongoing, diverse, longitudinal, and multi-site study of 11,880 adolescents in the United States. The ABCD Study provides open access to data about pubertal development at a large scale, and this article is a researcher’s guide that both describes its pubertal variables and outlines reco...

The COVID-19 pandemic has touched the lives of adolescents around the world. This longitudinal, observational study followed 1,334 adolescents (11 - 17 yo) to investigate whether personal and/or caregiver resilience relates to changes in internalizing symptoms during six stressful weeks of COVID-19 lockdown in Perú. In this work, we contextualize s...

Relative to other racial/ethnic groups in the United States, Hispanic American (HA) youth have higher rates of overweight and obesity. Previous work suggests that low perceived social status (SS) promotes excess caloric intake and, thereby, development of obesity. Psychological resilience may play a role in reducing adverse eating behaviors and ris...

Through the Adolescent Brain and Cognitive Development℠ (ABCD) Study, developmental scientists have open access to data about pubertal development within the context of a large, diverse sample of adolescents in the United States. For researchers interested in analyzing this data, this article provides a user’s guide that both describes these variab...

Eating behaviors, including unhealthy snacking or excessive snacking leading to excess calorie consumption, may contribute to obesity among adolescents. Socioeconomic status (SES) also significantly influences eating behaviors, and low SES is associated with increased risk for obesity. However, little is known regarding the relationship between sna...

Although the body-size stigma affects access and quality of care, no known study to date has evaluated overall patient experience among those with overweight or obesity. To determine whether overall satisfaction with health care received and perceived interaction quality with a health care provider were associated with clinically defined body mass...
