Iran – with 1,640,000 square kilometers area, in the south-west of Asia- of the northern hemisphere, has its specific combination of different elements of life and a special ecosystem and biodiversity due to various factors including different climatic conditions, high mountains all around and a large desert in center. The Lichen flora of Iran is active project, started from May 2016, The project was outlined as an international lichen project in SW Asia. The principal objective of the Lichen Flora of Iran is to produce a comprehensive lichen flora for Iran. The study will include all lichenized and lichenicolous fungi (currently over 200 known genera). In addition, we also plan to include a few number of saprophytic fungi (currently 3 known genera). The study area is defined broadly to include whole Iranian Phytogeographical regions, mainly Irano-Turanian region as the largest.
